What do you really want from a mobile phone? An all-singing, all- communicating voice, video and data monster in your pocket? Or something that makes reli- able calls? Every phone company on the planet is on tenterhooks about that question. They have bet the bank that we are craving something more than voice. Three recent smart phones show you what is supposed to be the way forward: Nokia’s 7650, Sony Ericsson’s P800 and the Orange-only SPV, the first mobile phone to have a Microsoft operating system inside. All of them can handle voice calls, data, picture messaging, calendars and games, and talk to PCs. Unfortunately for Nokia and Sony Ericsson, only one fits comfortably in a jacket pocket.

First and foremost for me: reliable calls, anywhere and everywhere.

I just dropped my T-Mobile cell service because my employer gave me a Nextel phone for on-call purposes. The walkie-talkie thing comes in handy for data center and network support. Anyway, I have to say that Nextel has the worst cellular coverage/reliability I have ever encountered, and I have used a cell phone for 10 years (Sprint, AT&T, Voicestream). I'm constantly losing calls in places the T-Mobile service (and the Voicestream service before that) was rock solid. Ironically, the walkie-talkie part works everywhere, even when the cellular service won't.

I'll take reliability and stability over whiz-bang features any day. Then again, I'm an enigma.
