Wardriving is actually really fun! Even if it is tempting to connect to those unsecured network it could be risky. For exemple, if you have a pop3 account that happens to look for mail while you are connected to one of those network, your password might get sniffed! Every time you make a connection your mac address also appears on the router you make the connection with (I know you can change it with a few registry tweaks but...). Some companies have been known to leave unprotected network in the open to be used as a bait for intruders. I happened to turn on my wifi antenna at work the other day only to find 2 unsecured networks in the building! A lawyer office and a website designer office. How secure?! People should actually read what comes with their brandnew router! Bye.

The number one safest thing you can do if you have WiFi is to simply turn off File Sharing on all computers on the network. If you need to share some files, turn File Sharing on, move the files around, then turn it off again.

This will keep you safer than any other means of protection. The other methods (SSID, change router password, use WPA, etc) they are all good, but if you disable file sharing, your router will only be a conduit to the Internet.
