I seem to remember something from a long while ago where somebody was using a program or some sort of hack so that icons did not show up in I believe either start menu or programs menu. As my x5 is getting older and fuller I am looking for ways to save memory and I am pretty sure as after I do a soft reset I have 13 mb in program memory and like 11 after I open up the start menu and programs directory that these icons are taking up space in my programs memory and I would liike to turn them off. Thanks for your help.

I believe you're referring to removing icons from your startup folder. If you have 13 in there, you're loosing precious memory. I've found that none of them are necessary, and simply use precious resources on my Axim. Here's how I do it:

1. Copy your \windows\startup folder to your SD card
2. Delete all the files in your \windows\startup folder

Then do a soft reset and see if this frees up some memory. If you find that you really need one or more of the icons, you can copy it back from the folder you copied to your SD card!

Your Axim will run much better as well. poutlook.exe(or .lnk) doesn't need to be in there.

Note: If it doesn't let you delete one or more of the icons from the startup folder, chances are it is an app and is running. I've run into this once, and I had to kill the process and then remove the file.

they dont load at startup, they load when I open up the programs menu. Its just the little picture icons that I want to turn off and I am positive I remember someone talking about this like last year.

I guess I'm not really sure what you're looking to accomplish here. Moving these 13 icons is going to free up such minimal space, its not worth the effort to do it. They maybe take up 1K a piece, so you'd free 13K.

You'd be better off moving your actual applications to a SD card of BIS.

whats bis?
all of my apps are on my sd card but I have the cheapest axim ever made (x5 300mhz) and I like to save all I can. The icons still take a quite a while to load and Id like to just turn them off. I dont know if anyone else remembers this thing I am talking about, maybe I am just going crazy.

BIS - Built-in Storage

Meaning you don't want any of the Icons to load in the programs folder? That's simple, copy the\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder to your SD card, then delete all the files in the \Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder. When you launch the folder, there will be nothing in it, and thus nothing to load.

If this sounds drastic, I have 2 other suggestions:

1. Install one of the more widely known Overclocking utilities (Pocket Hack Master or XCPUScalar) to increase the processor and memory speed of your Axim.

2. Set Glyph Cache to 16384 using the free RegKing utility. This increases the speed at which WM renders graphics.

I too run into the same situation that you're describing, but only when I set my processor (400 MHz) speed to 200 MHz and below. This decreases the speed at which graphics are renderes, and the icons you speak of are graphics. This didn't start happening until I my Programs folder started getting larger, as WM had to render more icons.
