Backing up ROM on X3

I want to try Linux on my Dell Axim X3, but I would like to have a way to restore things back to current state if things don't go well. Does anyone know of any way to to backup the ROM such that I can have a Windows Mobile 2003 backup? Alternatively, does anyone know of a way to reinstall Windows Mobile 2003? My Dell Axim came with no Windows Mobile 2003 CD or OS installation media.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dude-

The only method for backing up the ROM that I have seen is in the Axim X5 WM 2003 upgrade instructions. I believe they include a utility on the CD to back up the ROM. Not sure if this is even reliable. And no, they don't include the WM 2003 ROM software on the Axim CD.

My advice would be to call Dell and tell them what you would like to do and see if they will send you a WM 2003 ROM CD. If you get the Dell version, it's less likely to void your warranty. I would also ask them if putting Linux on your Axim in and of itself will void the warranty (you never know).

There now may be a way. Dell released a ROM upgrade for the X3 on May 24th. The first screen of the upgrade has an option to back up your current ROM. You do not have to apply the ROM update to back up your ROM. In the event that you would want to restore it, you could launch the update again and restore your WM 2003 ROM.
