THANKYOU

**THANK YOU** for posting the image file and the instructions to get it to work. I'm peeved that Dell has pulled support and distribution for WM2003 for our X5's (can't even buy the software anywhere), so it is great to have users helping users like this.
I'm working fine with the upgrade now, but to add my experiences in case it helps someone else:
- tried loading img file from SD card, this does not work. CF card is required.
- I formatted my CF card using trial version of Anton Tomov's Pocket Machanic program under my PocketPC2002 OS (note that the program is worth purchasing!. Used PC to copy img file to SD card (no CF card slot in PC, but I could copy direct to Lexar USB JumpDrive Trio w/SD card), inserted SD card into Axim, and copied onto newly-formatted CF card. Got it?

- 'L' version of img file wasn't recognised as valid, so as suggested, I loaded the 'H' file instead, and that worked fine.
- I had to release the CONTACT and SCROLL keys just after the white boot screen came up, otherwise the Axim went into diagnostic mode (my Axim h/w is apparently working fine, thanks)
- if the img file doesn't load properly, all you lose is your data and programs; PPC2002 is still loaded in ROM and will load up fine. You can recover your backup (you *did* do a full backup before trying this, didn't you?) if necessary. It is only when the new WM2003 img file is detected and loads that your '02 OS is erased from ROM. Just don't lose power during the erase/load process!
Otherwise, just follow the instructions that omaraxim has listed, and you should be fine. Pressing the keys is tricky, but it works. Don't get frustrated that it doesn't work the first time - keep trying, be patient and work it out, and you'll get there.
Again, MANY thanks and kudos to omaraxim for posting - I'm one happy guy!

Thanks a million guys!
Xander.
I received my CF Card in the post this morning, all worked well using "P25_NK_H_07170300EN.IMG" Rom loaded onto the card. I messed the button pushing up a bit and let go of them all at the same time after only about 5 seconds of holding them all, but sure enough i still saw the white screen and on it went doing it's thing :P
Had a few problems afterwards with activesync, the axim was bringing up critical errors, a hard reset later and clear out the old connections from activesync on the host pc and all was well.
I used a Kingston 256mb card for reference.
Thanks to everyone whos posted![]()

I read this thread with interest... found a bit of an easier method that doesn't require being double jointed to push all the buttons ........
Took me about 15min to copy existing rom ... 10 mins to download the hex editor and do the copy replace... then 15min to load the new rom ... easy and it now works !!!
WM2003 Update for Dell Axim X5 with PPC2002
Files needed: Hex Workshop from www.bpsoft.com
R64365.EXE WM2003 ROM update (which has been pulled from the Dell ftp server)
NOTE: Best to perform a hard reset on your device and remove any SD/compact flash cards in your device before you start
Extract the R64365.EXE file and run the System Update.exe and choose to back-up your ROM image, it will save a copy of your current ROM as an .ris file.
Choose the correct update ROM image for your Axim, P25_NK-H-07170300EN.IMG for Axim Advance (400MHz) or P25_NK-L-07170300EN.IMG for Axim Basic (300MHz) and rename the file extention to .ris
Load up Hex Workshop and open up your backup ROM image and the update ROM image side-by-side. Copy the hex code from offset 106 to 128 from your BACKUP and paste in into the UPDATE at the same position offsets. This is your Axim serial code and is necessary to fool the backup ROM option of the installer into thinking the update ROM is your backup ROM. Save the modified update ROM image.
Run the System Update.exe again to choose to restore a backup ROM image. Select your patched ROM file (P25_NK-H-07170300EN.ris or P25_NK-L-07170300EN.ris) and let it 'restore' your PPC2002 to WM2003. Enjoy!!
PS There has been some discussion whether or not this is the final fixed version or a BETA patch, Dell have confirmed it IS the final version but have pulled it from their ftp server because it's more sucessful to update from PPC2002 than from the buggy WM2003 that it was intended for!!!
This goes out to dellaximman
My friend, you are a legend !! I had a 40 minute call with Dell asking how they can release a product, and then 18 months not support any upgrades.
Anyway, your restore process worked perfectly, so a huge thanks !!!
Now here's a tricky one for you. Any idea how to get Windows Mobile 2003 SE on an Axim x5 ??
I've searched the net and it appears that no one has found a way.
If anyone has any advice, please don't hesitate in voicing it...
I didn't work it out so can't take any credit. I found it care of google and an East European forum. The discussoin was all in crylic script but the instructions were in english - probably cut and pasted from somewhere
The wonders of Google!
:inlove: Thank you guyys so much! I'm hoping now to get a good CF to USB card so I can hook up a USB HD so I can listen to mp3s and my dvds while I'm studying in China! Any one have any suggestions about which cards are good or any problems they've had?
