German software maker SoftMaker today announced availability of
the first public beta of SoftMaker Office 2006 for Windows CE. This
means that SoftMaker Office 2006 now not only runs on Windows,
Linux, FreeBSD, Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs, but also on
Windows CE and
CE.NET - no other office suite worldwide achieves
this flexibility.

TextMaker and PlanMaker
SoftMaker Office 2006 is composed of two applications:
* TextMaker 2006 is a powerful word processor that is compatible
with most word processing formats, including all versions of
Microsoft Word.
* PlanMaker 2006 is a feature-rich spreadsheet application that is
completely compatible with Microsoft Excel.
Together, TextMaker 2006 and PlanMaker 2006 cover the two most
important applications users require from modern office suites in a
user-friendly application suite.
Most important: SoftMaker Office 2006 not only reads and writes
Word and Excel files without losing any formatting, it is also
capable of this task equally well on all operating systems. It is
therefore possible to edit the same document on Windows
PCs, Pocket PCs or Handheld PCs with Windows CE as well as on
Linux and FreeBSD computers.

Beta test for Windows CE is starting now
The public beta version of SoftMaker Office 2006 for Windows CE is
now available as a free download from SoftMaker's homepage at
www.softmaker.com. It is easy to install on the mobile device and
can be fully used until January 31, 2007.
Especially on Handheld PCs with the Windows CE operating system,
a full-featured office suite was sorely lacking. The preinstalled
programs Pocket Word and Pocket Excel look like a "toy office" as
they provide only rudimentary functionality and remove most
formatting from existing Word and Excel files.
In contrast, SoftMaker Office 2006 lets you use all the features
of a powerful office suite even on Windows CE devices. The programs
not only use their own file format but also read and write Word and
Excel files and read OpenOffice.org and OpenDocument files faithfully.
The beta version of SoftMaker Office 2006 for Windows CE is
