Skype Offers Free Landline/Cell Phone Calls
Skype, the leader in free VOIP calling, announced today in a press release that it will allow FREE calls to landline and cell phones within the US and Canada until "at least the end of 2006".
This applies to its software on all platforms including Pocket PC. Locate a hotspot, turn on wireless, and make free phone calls using your Axim!
This coincides with a minor version update released today. I found that I needed to download and install the new version to get it to call my cell phone. The incoming number was 000-012-3456.

On the X51v, by default the Landscape mode is 0 degree, i.e. vertical. When using Skype or any VOIP application, the microphone is on top and the speaker is at the bottom making it unconventional to use the device as a phone.
To get around this, we can set the Landscape mode "rotation angle" to 180 degrees. This will flip the screen upside down. In other words, the microphone will be at the bottom of the Skype screen and the speaker at the top.
Edit the following registry key to change the value of the angle from 0 to 180. Keep the default LandscapeMode value as 0.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\ROTATION
Angle=180
LandscapeMode=dword:00000000
This configuration work best for lefties.

Skype worked pretty well with dsl
I have an older machine running winxp pro. Skype worked pretty well with their free pc to landline service. The people on the other end said I was pretty clear. Minor lag.
A far cry from the olden days.

Um guess I should have said I did not try to use it with my X5. Don't think there's a way to do the microphone AND earphone type heaset with those. My mom has an X51v tho - maybe I'll see how it works. On the pc, tho, it was great.
