A Microsoft executive confirmed the development of the successor to Windows Mobile 5.0, codenamed Crossbow. The announcement was made Monday, April 24.
Crossbow, or Windows Mobile 5 SE, will incorporate enhancements to the Pocket Office suite of applications and an IM client for public and private networks. It will be developed with a focus on compatibility with the upcoming Office 2007 and Exchange Server 12.
Crossbow is slated to be released somewhere in Q1 or Q2 of 2007. Being a second edition update and not a major revision upgrade, Dell should be expected to issue a ROM upgrade for their current Windows Mobile 5 capable devices when Crossbow is released.
Microsoft is also working on the major upgrade release to Windows Mobile 5, Windows Mobile 6 codenamed Photon. Photon is tentatively slated for release around Q1 or Q2 of 2008.
