WM2005 Upgrades delayed due to OS bugs
The new PDA operating system WM2005 launched to the market in September 2005 is causing problems for suppliers and users alike.
A review of the internet shows compaines who have supplied PDA's with the new OS are receiving high numbers of technical calls due to unexpected "system features" such as lock ups.
Microsoft have released an updated version of WM2005 that is supposed to fix many of the problems, but as with all new Operating systems, only time will tell if they are sucessfull or what new "features" the upgrade adds.
PDA suppliers, Dell included, are subjecting the new version of WM2005 to extensive testing before release, hopefully to determine if reported X51 problems are OS or PDA related.
Although WM2005 PDA's are still being supplied, the main effect of the OS instability is a delay in releasing Updates for machines such as the X50.
Dell have presold upgrades to WM2005 to many X50 owners, who expected to receive the new OS in September. Dell are continuously pushing back shipment dates and it is possible that shipment could be as late as December 2005.
X50 owners should take note that HP have already changed the release date for the HX4700 upgrade to Spring 2006, with a growing number of reports that HP are considering marking the HX4700 obsolete in some countries so that they can avoid issuing any update. ( unconfirmed).
