Dell Axim ROM Upgrade Now Available
Source: Dell
You may now download the latest ROM Update for the Dell Axim. The utility updates ROM A00 to A02.
The upgrade process with wipe everything in RAM and ROM, so backup your device prior to initiating the process.
Noticible difference that I've seen so far is the aplet for enabling the center of the Navigation Button.

Did a soft reset, not a hard reset. Just glad to have my Axim back!
Is the upgrade really worth it. Never did a back up on mine!

If you have a secure digital or compact flash card, the Dell Backup utility will allow you to back your information and data there.
Let me see if I can find some type of backup utlility that would allow you to save it on your HDD if you don't have an external storage card.

Couldn't you just move the backup file using ActiveSync explorer off of your Axim and place it on your HDD? That is.....if you are near your Desktop/Laptop.
This is what I have done in the past.
