I noticed on handango that there is an application to play dvd movies on the ppc. I don't remember the name of the application, but it did of course, have a disclaimer that it was not intended to rip copyrighted material, etc.

Has anyone tried using an app like this to pull a movie off a standard store-bought copyrighted dvd to play on the x5?

I know there are dvdcopy softwares out there, but I have never tried one. They would have to be awfully compressed anyway to run on a ppc - even with a 256mb sd card.

ah, here it is. "dvd to pocket pc" for $24.99.

Thanks,

I've played such movies on my PC. You need dvd ripping software and probobly an encoder like div-x which plays avi files at decent quality and lowers the file size but most div-x movies still turn out to be like 500mb. Youd probobly need a 1g card just to get a single movie.

[edit] i guess 500 would give you two on a one gig card lol

My review on this product is on its way. All I can say that DVD to Pocket PC is an awesome product.

I purchased DVD 2 PPC about a month ago and had pretty disappointing results. Though it appears possibly to be a WMP9 problem more than a DVD2PPC problem. DVD2PPC does a pretty good job of ripping the DVDs - it has a very simple interface - in just a minute or so before going to bed for the night - or going to work - you get it started and when you come back to it - it's done. The big issue I ran into is that WMP9 hangs on the PPC after playing only a small fraction of the movie. It hangs EVERY TIME. I've ripped several different movies and got the same result. The kicker is that WMP on my desktop seems to play the same file without a problem. I've traded emails with Makayama software and haven't yet got it resolved. My next stop is Dell Technical Support. I must admit to some suspicion that some of the raving reviews I've seen are shills.

Well I had a problem at first, but after I cleaned my HDD, defrag it, and a good old restart, I didn't experience any problems. The program itself is just a frontend for Window Media Encoder, and it just made it a lot easier for you to rip the movie to a WMV file. No more TWEAKING WME.

Bought it. Love it. It's kind of buggy, but functional.

anyone know if this program allows the playing/streaming of DVD VOB files from a mapped server share? - like Intervideo's WinDVD?
