AJAX for X30

I've been creating an AJAX application and have been using my Dell X30 as one test platform. AJAX is the latest and greatest in web page (web services) development; most prominently behind advanced Google applications such as Google Mail and Google Maps. (If you want to know a little more techically, see "Techie:" below.)

I read a blog comment by a Microsoft employee claiming that Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer in Windows Mobile 2003 support AJAX. It was a bit of an odd blog comment because the techie information mentioned there had little to do with AJAX ... just some older stuff having to do with DHTML (Dynamic HTML ... changing information within a web page.) I've tried everything I can think of ... days of work ... and have not been able to get AJAX to work in Pocket Internet Explorer in Windows Mobile 2003.

If you want AJAX on your X30, do not despair. I have it working in Opera for Pocket PC and Mozilla's Minimo. Of the two browsers, Opera works best; so that is likely what I will use for demos on the X30. You can get a free trial download of Opera for Pocket PC. I then paid a license fee of €19 because I want to continue using Opera.

Techie: AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML. It means that the html page (script) can communicate with sophisticated programs, not have to wait for responses, and the html page can be updated with new information without reloading the page.

Took me a while to find it again ... had to remember that the search terms included "Windows Mobile 2003" rather than X30.

There is more technical information that I remembered ... but then maybe I remembered all the quotes of the article better than the article itself.

The problem is with the XML HTTP request:

xmlHttpReq = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP");
or
xmlHttpReq = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP")

I've tried this on the X30 with all the software updated; and it returns a blank string = ""

That screws everything up and forces me to include an extra error check just for Windows Mobile 2003

The server is not always running. Stockholm is 6 hours ahead of the US east coast, so you have a pretty good chance if you try it early on a weekday.

If you try it; I would appreciate feedback .... what device did you use (please feel free to try anything with a browser) and what response did you get?

I have tested on the most recent versions of MSIE, Firefox, Opera, Opera on Symbian (Nokia E70), and on my X30, Windows Mobile 2003 -> PIE (didn't work), Opera, and Minimo.
