For those who want to be Picasso or da Vinci using their Axim or other Pocket PCs, Cobalt Interactive's iPaint is a great application for those who want to make their own rendition of the Mona Lisa in the digital age.

What does Cobalt Interactive says about their application? “iPaint is a feature-rich, high performance, drawing and image-editing application for the Pocket PC.” The application does have enough tools like the Pencil, Airbrush, and Smudge; to allow you to transfer the image in your mind on the paper …I mean the screen.

To use the pencil, precision is what’s needed here. I would suggest using a pen stylus rather than the stylus that came with the Axim. It was a little frustrating at first using the pencil, but once you learned the proper way to handle it and its opacity, off you go to your first masterpiece.

Airbrush, I think, is a great feature that could enhance the pencil if you want to give it a soft touch around the edges. As for the smudge feature, it can give your image a softer touch, texture, and it could allow you to mix color that’s already on the canvas.

Of course iPaint's features don’t stop there. You can create outlined or filled lines, rectangles, and ellipses. Of course, what paint program would not have an Eraser feature, in which you can utilize and make effects with some quick strokes? Text, eyedropper, paintcan, select and move, hand to scroll around the canvas rounds off some of the features that comes with the application. Once you’re done with your work and you want to save it, you can export your work to a JPG or BMP file. The application will also allow you to import other JPG or BMP files for you to modify.
As any application out there, iPaint has room for improvement. For instance, selecting a color from the palette is a chore. Although a lever is provided to select the major colors, it is hard to select the precise color that you might want to use. For example, if you have a dark background, and you want to use white paint, it is nearly impossible to the select that color. The Undo command only tracks the last entry that you’ve done. Other than that, those are the only features that I think that Cobalt Interactive can improve upon.
iPaint gives you just the right tools for the right job and the right type of device. It doesn’t flood you with tools that you might not need or use. The application can also be entertaining if you just want to doodle around while you’re on a road trip or waiting on bus or airplane. I just don’t suggest doodling while in meetings. Serious artist may want to consider looking at this application. You just never know when an idea or picture might appear in your mind. The application can be downloaded at
www.Handango.com as for $19.99 for the full version or a trail version.
I’ve have been using the application for a couple of weeks now, and from what I’ve learned from this application, once you’ve learned the techniques and features of what it has to offer, your imagination is the only limitation.
