Define addictive. Momentum Games’ Pocket Mini golf might be the most addictive Pocket PC game I’ve ever played. This game is just plain fun.
There is one important thing that you have to setup before you get to this point though. Turn off the falling text! When I first installed this game, I went right into game modes. It wasn’t until later that the falling text between playing holes had annoyed me so much, that I hunted down the setting to turn it off.
There is also a setting for “control method 1 or 2”. I have yet to figure out the difference though.
All menus have a scrolling background which overview certain holes on the course. A nice touch.
There are a couple of game options. There are four different characters you can choose to play. All anime style. Then there is a beginner, and an expert difficulty setting. The difference being, in the beginner setting you can select how hard you want to hit the ball. In the expert game, the power meter swings back and forth. Also, par per hole is more on the beginner setting. Go right for the expert, it doesn’t swing that fast, and from what I’ve noticed; you never really need to be that precise in your speed. Also, there should never be a par 4 on a miniature golf course.
You are then presented with three game modes: Normal, Arcade and Practice. In normal, you play normal. What a concept. Arcade mode is really cool, actually. Not only do you want to stay under par, but you’re also timed. There is a countdown clock in the corner, so you only have a few second to sink the ball. I haven’t had an issue where time was a factor, unless I’m doing something else at the same time. It does add a little something to the game though. After that, there are three courses to play. Easy, medium and hard. You have to score par or under to unlock the next course.
Game play is a blast! You aim with a line of dots that protrude from your ball, and then tap your character to bring up the power meter. Tap the power meter again when it’s where you want it to be, and you’re off. The power seems a little odd at first, almost as if there is a small sweet spot between a really hard hit, and a really soft one. That takes some getting used to.
You can also rotate around the hole, to make sure that you’re aiming in the right direction. The holes themselves are diversified enough to keep you interested as you go. And the graphics are fantastic. The sound is great, although I will admit that the repetition gets a little annoying.
The only downside of this game, and in my mind it’s a big one, is the lack of a multiplayer mode. I want to play against my friends. That was the only disappointment I had.
Great graphics, good sound, extremely addictive game play makes this a top notch game. One of the best time killers I’ve played so far. Lack of multiplayer mode knocks it down a few notches though. That aside, it is a really fun game to play. I give Momentum Games Pocket Mini Golf an 8.5 out of 10.
