I’m following up my review of Handmark's Monopoly with another board game port: Handmark's Scrabble. With these two reviews I’ve realized one thing…Handmark can remake a board game!
Right off the bat, this feels like the board game Scrabble. Right down to the wooden piece trays with “Scrabble” inlaid in gold.
Setup and game modes:
You can have up to four players, both computer and human. There are also three different computer settings; easy, medium and hard. You can also play multiplayer on the same device, or by beaming it between devices. You can choose friendly, or tournament modes.
Friendly mode is exactly what it sounds like. Tournament however, plays a little different. In tournament mode, you have the option to challenge the words your opponent attempts to play. This game does have a built in dictionary, and a setting to look up every word that is entered. And in case you were wondering,
zquekarz, as it would be a high scoring one, is not, in fact a word. Re, on the other hand,
is a word. Who knew? By the way, you lose a turn if you challenge a word, and you’re wrong.
Friendly mode also has a built in suggestion, so basically, if you’re stuck, you can cheat. Seriously though, this game is just plain old fun. If you enjoyed the board game, you’ll love it for the Pocket PC. I do my reviews on a 10 point scale. I also don’t give out 10s that often. I’m a firm believer that things are never absolutely perfect.
That being said, I give Handmark's Scrabble the highest score this side of the second coming, a 9.5 out of 10. The only thing missing from this game is the clean up of the board and pieces, and no one likes that part.
