The fact that MS still has not popup blocker is amazing to me.
|
Microsoft will be adding a popup blocker to IE with a Windows service pack next year.
http://news.com.com/2100-1024-5110805.html
Yahoo, Google, and ZoneAlarm all make up popup blockers (the first two are free). Also, as already mentioned, Netscape, Mozilla, and Firebird all have popup blockers.
|
True, but until its built in, we will still see the popups because most people won't have Google Toolbar or other ways to block the ads.
Or just use Norton Internet Security and block everything. [/b][/quote]
This site does not have any pop-up ads, and never will. It will also never have pop-under ads, either.

No but with Norton, one could block the ads you see on the page. I don't do it because sometimes I find something out new, but you could render every ad not served on Aximusers blocked with the software.

And as Jason Dunn of PocketPC Thoughts has expressed, blocking a site's ads and being public about it is a way that a site owner could and may block your account. People that run sites like this aren't just doing it for the love of the game. Many of them are counting on the added revenue a site brings for their family's welfare.

Oooh oooh, I'd better add something. Hornet and nest spring to mind!
No slur intended, but on almost every page of this brilliant site I get a Spybot message saying it has blocked the Avenue A Inc thing. Fair enough, it's an advert doing it. But it also seems to mean I have to have three or four bashes at reloading the page before I can read it. The phrase here is 'Done but with errors on page' ...

Wait, if you telling me that you are only hosting this site to make money and not to help your users then maybe this isn't the place for me. Jason does this because he loves it, not to make money. Jason is a Pocket PC MVP and has so been for years. Are you? I can't belive you would write this. To compare your site to Pocket PC Thoughts is incorrect.
I don't block your ads nor anyones else, but its my choice not yours. The fact you believe you can do whatever you want to your users amazes me. You can consider me lost because I don't want to invest my time someplace where someone could care less about their users and only about money. I'm sure you are making money now you are appearing in Google so losing me won't matter to your bottom line, but I'm done with you and you site.

Funny, that's not how I read Ninja's response. I read it to mean that Jason Dunn stated that having a great site for the users of PDAs may not be the sole objective of the site, that people who host such sites might also hope that the time and effort they put in to provide the information, software and hardware could also hope to make money through these sites. Unless someone's last name is Hilton, I can completely understand this. If everyone posted to forums saying they have ways of avoiding all the ads, then what advertiser is going to pay for them? Perhaps my intelligence is too limited to see what other options are available for such forums (who don't charge subscription fees) to stay up and running. However, it's obvious not everyone is as idea-challenged as me; perhaps the admins can have a contest to see which member can come up with the best way of making sure AUDC pays its bills without inconveniencing the readers more than a little. If the prize were a TabletPC, maybe even I'd get a clue. Now, excuse me while I go click on this Sprint ad.

My take on all of this is, it's not fair to block normal ads. Because they deprive the site of revenue. But if the ads are the crazy kind like the ones that float over the page, the ones that add little links so users get confused, tracking cookies, or popups, it's fine (and even a right) to block them.
PS thank you computer ninja for deciding never to add popups!

THE FOLLOWING IS MY OPINION ONLY:
Minimage you are correct in the way you took Ninjas respone. Jim, you missed it completely.
Jason excersise his right, on his own site, to block someones account who publicly posts how they block the ads. What's wrong with that? Blocking ads on a site, hurts the site. If everyone knew how to do it, and no one ever clicked the ads, how long do you think that site would stay running?
To say that you will no longer visit this site because Ninja likes the revenue coming in is rediculous. It sounds like you're looking for a site that is put out to help Jim, as long as that site doesn't have anything on it you don't want to look at. Good luck finding it.
There is nothing free in this world. If you're so appalled at the fact that there are ads on this site, or that people actually rely on some sort of income coming back from a site that THEY PAY FOR and DEDICATE THEIR TIME TO, why don't you take the money out of your pocket and start a your own ad free site. :angry2:

I'll second that. Ads are fine. As a matter of fact I've actually found some cool new products due to the ads on this site. On the other hand the non-standard ads suck. Thank you AUDC for putting on a great site, and keeping it up.
