I appreciate the comments and concerns that my readers have, and I have to admit, having posted something like Jason did would have been more professional and courteous. I have turned down the number of highlighted words in this new ad program to see what sort of impact this has.

Fair enough. Less is a great start. Its too bad you can't direct them to Pocket PC stuff, rather than what they do now. That might actually be useful.
Anyway, the reason why they only work in IE 6 is because as you saw in the PPCT thread,
Learn more about these here..

Note that isn't a MS Support site... :P [/b][/quote]
I would LOVE it if the text based ad program only threw ads readers' way that had something to do with PocketPC and related items. I didn't feel a need to explain myself to the users of the site, as I honestly felt it was very minimal and unobtrusive. I have, like I said, reduced the number of words.
And again, the different ad programs are highly experimental. As the site grows, and I grow, the balance of ads, which, how many, how often, will change to a healthy balance that should accommodate the readers of the site as well as the site's management team.
I am also investigating having ways that readers can turn off these ads (text) as well as other ads. PocketPC Thoughts has a subscription model where users can turn off all ads. AnandTech has a cookie based system that allows users to turn off the text ads. We'll see what I can find to make everyone happy. If someone out there knows of a way, feel free to PM me.
Thanks for everyone's continued support.

For the record, they aren't bothering me. I'd simply prefer you guys do what you need to keep this site going (well, with the exception of selling my email address and using obsessive pop-ups, not that I think you'd do it), as long as money from my pocket is optional, cuz, well, it seems I don't have money left after I spend it on my Axim!

The fact that MS still has not popup blocker is amazing to me.
|
Microsoft will be adding a popup blocker to IE with a Windows service pack next year.
http://news.com.com/2100-1024-5110805.html
Yahoo, Google, and ZoneAlarm all make up popup blockers (the first two are free). Also, as already mentioned, Netscape, Mozilla, and Firebird all have popup blockers.

May I regroup here, and go back to the words which now show up as links in the forum? I'm using IE, and see words such as axim, post etc, as a link, which variously take me to unexpected places if clicked.
Is this what you folks are talking about? IS this something instituted by aximusers? I'm assuming so.
I am not a fan of this sort of advertising, but I suppose I always have the option of leaving if it becomes too intrusive.

Yes its done by Aximusers. So what does this mean?
Look at this. If I create a link with the word axim in it, look what happens.
axim
But sometimes the forum software will use their own axim link. I don't think it will overwrite what I posted, but can you imagine someone not knowing the difference between the links and going getting angry because they were pointed into a site that they didn't think they were going? I would assume this would be a situation that the management here doesn't want, but it will happen. I mean, does this add anything to the site? I dont' think so. I click on banners that have to do with PDA's and the Axim, but does a banner for ITT have anything to do with this site other than gaining money. I'll gladly donate to keep the ads down, but I can't see doing so at this point. This site looks like a NASCAR race.
Sorry, but this is how I feel.

Well, I have to admit to being a weird one. Clippit the Microsoft Assistant was widely hated in my circle, because he was a distraction. I, on the other hand, liked him. With that said, I checked the site out from IE, and I saw very few links. I passed my mouse over them and looked at the status bar on my browser, and I could then see that they were ad links. It was a bit startling when the first beige box popped up, but I'm far from wanting to write off AUDC! I do understand that others could be confused by the new stuff, though. I'm just glad that I don't have to make any decisions about the running of this place!

Maybe I'm being harsh here. I'm not saying I can't stay, I just wish there was an option to turn it off by donating. Sounds like there must be a way, but its beyond my quick research into how to do it.
My disappointment is with the amount of ads, not the fact that they are here. The fact that we have to mouse over the links to see if they are real is not fair to the users. I try and click on links and have even bought from the people who have placed ads here, but I fail to see how a link to a company link this http://www.barricade.net/ when I type the word posts.
I do appreciate being able to air my concerns here and I'm glad others feel the same way. Is if fair just because I use IE and not Mozilla I have to have these ads appear in my posts?

True, but until its built in, we will still see the popups because most people won't have Google Toolbar or other ways to block the ads.
Or just use Norton Internet Security and block everything.

Well, tempe, I'm with you on the annoying aspect of the in-post ads. Keeping the audc running is a business, I know, but this is one of my least favorite ways of seeing one funded.
The final control is mine on choosing to still come here, which I can always re-evaluate, I suppose.
