JT, I agree with you 100%
If you're going to sell computers, or even just processors, you should absolutely have a distinct logo. Hell, if you were going to sell anything you should. I couldn't agree more. Only problem is, it's a forum banner, not a company logo. Were not selling anything. I made the logo like that, so it would be crisp, and easy to distinguish what it is, and where you are. I even used the Axim font, not some downloaded Nasa ripoff. Someone else, earlier in this thread described it perfectly, the new logo looks great, if you were trying to sell me something. Which again, I remind you, were not.
But thats all I'm going to say on the subject. For now, I'm getting a headache trying to remember what all the logo's look like on the forums I'm a member of.

If you don't remember it vividly, then it wasn't all that great. I can VIVIDLY remember what Pocket PC Thoughts' logo is like, as it's a pretty cool illustration of a Pocket PC.
|
Dude, you don't think that sounds ungrateful?
Well, I hope you're not expecting people top run around screaming about how awesome that logo is. Do you believe that is a fabulous illustration of an Axim? The other one was better, IMO. Not really crazy about the "Brushed" 'Axim' look... it kinda takes away from the tightness/crispness of the Axim.
I'm a part of about 15 forums, and I couldn't tell you the logo of any of them. I think the fair way to vote on which one is better, is to post both of them, and have people chose, A or B. Or something similar.
I also think the contest is a way cool idea. The idea of possibly having Dell sponsor it, sounds pretty fun too. Either way, with all the resources you have as far as people in the field of graphics, it was pretty retarded to pay for one.
But, alas, have fun in whatever you decide to do.

Dude, I absolutely sounded ungrateful in that poast. It wasn't even the message I was trying to get across!
Dude, I absolutely DO NOT expect people to run around screaming how awesome or how crappy the new logo is.
Dude, I have resources that can make images for me. I figured that paying $25.00 would be a "fun" thing to do, to give it a shot. Did you even look at the logos that Got Logos has? Some of them were quite ingenious, and eye-catching. I decided to give them a shot.
Dude, my logo looks VERY Nasa-ish... I didn't design it, I just paid $25.00 for it. Nothing more, nothing less. I didn't give Got Logos ANY direction when I had them make it. I just paid the $25.00 via PayGrip, and waited for my logo to be delivered.

Branding != Selling.
The point, I think, is that any web site needs something to distinguish it from other web sites. That's why community-based web sites have color schemes, different policies, different forum titles, etc. and yes, logos. The best example I can think of (and one of the biggest community-oriented sites I know of) is Ars Technica.
I guess I am to blame for this controversy, I am the one that suggested gotlogos.com to ComputerNinja. They did a logo for me that I liked, and I was impressed by the value. I only suggested it to him because like me, he sometimes experiments with different web sites, even if the experiment costs money, just for "fun".

Just do a contest now, while the site is young... and still growing up.

Okay, dude. No need to get your panties all in a bunch.
And I just looked at some of the logos, and they are pretty damn good. For $25, I guess you couldn't go wrong by seeing what they could do for you. But, IMO, I think in comparison to some of the other things that I saw, it ranks on the low end of what they can do. I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings here... Hell, you didn't make it. I just think that it could be better. That's all.
I think the contest would be great.

The old logo was not really a logo or necessarily a distincive design of any type. It looked amateurish but this is not to flame, these forums have enough of that already.
The new logo conforms to the sensibilities of a true logo. For instance - you don't use real photographs in a true logo. You do something a bit more imaginative than gradated copies of the word 'Axim' in Arial font with the cliche symmetrical framing of a couple of photos taken off the Dell site. That was not a logo at all but part of a header.
What is this garbage about downloading a ripped off font. No designer creates first the typeface and then does the logo - so all fonts are 'ripped' off. Nothing is 'ripped' off more than Arial.
The new logo is great. It has personality and it has some style. It picks up on the colors of the site. The designer put some intelligent thinking into the elliptical leading from the Axim drawing to the 'X'...the 'X' having a hub in the middle (can you say 'forum'?) with extensions or arms leading from it.
Most of you people ought to quit whining. ComputerNinja - most people are only good a doing that so take it all with a grain of salt.
I think the vote had 70 percent of forum members liking the new logo? And all forums have tough, if not unreasonable crowds.
You paid 25 bucks for that? You got a great deal if you had someone design something customized like that.
