Windows Update question

Recently (within the past two weeks) Windows Update installed a program on my computer called Microsoft XML 4.0 Parser.
I have no idea what this update is for but, ever since it's been on my computer, other programs (Microsoft Works Suite) continue to crash. At one point, I uninstalled the XML program and the Works Suite began working again.
A day or so ago, Windows Update (automatically runs) put this program back on my computer.
I tried contacting Microsoft for some infomation but they tell me that since I have a Dell computer, I need to contact Dell with any questions. (okay, yeah, right).

I have three questions.....
1. what is this program?
2. do I need it?
3. how do I stop Windows Update from automatically running? (windowsME)

Hi janine248,

Well I know what you mean about DeLL customer service. Also here are my basic opinions to your questions.

1- sorry, don't know but MS has a comment on it here.

2-not if it causes a trustworthy program to crash.

3-I would suggest you go to a Windows ME forum instead of this one which is AXIM oriented...maybe this Windows ME Forum.

Hope this helps and maybe someone else here will have something a little more direct for you, but I think you should find a good ME forum.

thank you Elyod for the help & links...sorry for posting a question like this on an Axim site. Although, I did post it in the Regualr BS area which claims to be 'for discussions of non axim topics'.
I came here looking for some wisdom as most times I am surrounded by people who don't know much about computers....like myself!!

Also, when my Axim does finally arrive (jeez I hope Dell can ship it this year), I will be back with more silly questions!!

Hey don't apologize, that wasn't a bad question at all. I just thought that someone may be able to help you here, but I guarantee they could help you at a site made for ME.
