I have a Digital Wallet from Minds@Work. It's totally no-frills... does exactly what it's supposed to do: copy contents of memory sticks. It's basically a 4.8GB notebook HD with a case. Wouldn't it be nice if they could somehow package a compact little HD in order to give you shitloads of storage space? Imagine the possibilities of using a pocket pc as a digitial wallet, MP3 storage, etc. What's the max memory that the current AXIM can hold?

I beleive it's 64mb. But with expansion slots (CF type I and II, and a SD slot) you can add a ton of storage. The coolest being the IBM microdrives, which can add an additional 1g! Good times.

Yeah. For example, I've got a 256MB SD card. So, you could take your compact flash card, say, if it's 64MB, and copy the images onto the SD card. Definitely NOT the same thing as a digital wallet, but you could make it work.
The IBM Microdrive is definitely the way to go, though. You'd have to have a camera that used SD or MMC memory though, as there is only one CF slot on the Axim.

Personally, I dont think the microdrive is the way to go, because many users have had troubles with it. It seems to be very unreliable and with storage that's what its about, really... Other than that, a microdrive is very energy hungry, so that doesnt make portable devices so portable.
I have heard rumors of a microdrive with 6Gb capacity being released early 2003, hopefully the new microdrive will have a lower power usage and a higher reliability. But personally I just dont think it's good for any type of hard disk (with moving parts) to walk around with them.

6GB is pretty damn sweet, though. Imagine having a camera with 6GB of storage, and days worth of battery life? That would make for vacation photo-taking bli$$.

I never bought that Casio camera when it was first out because of all the bad press microdrives were getting. At first I thought, "Damn! A 340MB microdrive! That rules!" So I waited and waited and waited. Eventually got the Sony DSC S-75.
I have one 128MB Memory stick, and a 5GB Minds@Work Unix-based Digital Wallet (totally no-frills... I love it) to use with my digi-cam. Vacations ARE bli$$. But, I'd buy an Axim today (so why am I posting here...? ) if it could sport 6GB.

There are alternatives to the microdrives. I have seen a few sites with 1GB CF cards. No SD 1GB yet that I have seen. Also, supposedly 2004 will introduce M-RAM (Magnetic RAM) and the talk is that it will allow enough memory to store and play full DVD movies on PPCs.
Can't wait!!!

Panasonic has announced the 1 Gb ...coming out this year.
Pretec is about to release their 1.5 Gb, 2 Gb, and 3 Gb CF memory.

More on the Panasonic 1 Gb SD card ...it also uses a new, faster data bus to move data from the card to a device, capable of up to 20 Mbps.
