Hi Avtek,
The key to choosing a database application- is the number of records and $ too. Here is a simple guide:
1. How many records are you expecting?
If you're tracking "your info provided" DAILY, your records (dates) will be in rows. Your "time started, time completed, equipment #, Comments, parts used", will be in columns.
Pocket Excel
16384 rows (records) per sheet.
3 sheets per file (table).
Total 49152 records (need to deduct a few rows for column headings).
49152 / 365 days = 134 years
(134 years!!! You'll be in the Guinness Book of Records ... the oldest person on earth; quote from my professor)
Pocket Excel is handy for a small repair shop inventory tracking.
If you need to track more than 134 years, create another file.
E.g. You are repairing my Dell Axim X51V everyday.
Filename: MyName_x51v.xls
After 134 years, the file ran out of rows. So, create another file MyName_x51v_2.xls
PE can be customized w/ user interface ... buttons, menus, softkeys. You can cross-reference (link) files/tables, rows/records, or columns/items.
To track your changes & if you're not familiar w/ customizing Excel ("programming"), you can Cut & Paste (insert row) from Pocket Excel to desktop Excel. The desktop Excel will be your Master copy; it grows/expand as the no. of records increase. You can track (Cut & Paste) daily, weekly, or monthly.
Pocket Accesss
If you need more than 50,000 records, this is the next level up.
SQL: It is unlikely you've an IT dept otherwise you'll be talking to them ... (not an insult, you know what I mean)
Pocket Excel & Acess comes w/ WM5.
There are more than 1 way of getting it done depending on $, how comfortable you're w/ the application ...
If you need clarification, ask.
