Need Help with Microsoft Reader

I have an x5 with ppc2003. Recently some of my secure books would no longer open, although I can read them on the pc fine. Fictionwise had me uninstall and download & reinstall the reader and books. Still won't open. They tell me that the reader version should be 2.3+ but I'm seeing 2.2.1 - and I am downloading the software anew from microsoft. I've removed it both via activesync and via the add/remove programs window on the pc. I even removed and downloaded and reinstalled the pc reader. I do a soft reset after each attempt also.

Has anyone else run into this? It's driving me nuts.

Hard reset is wiping my ppc and putting it to factory settings, right? Guess that might be my next step. What's the best way to go about it?
