Downloading problems from newsgroups

I'm having a problem downloading programs from a couple of newsgroups. If I download a zip or a rar as an extension I don't have a problem but when I try to download an .exe it saves as something completely different.As an example I tried downloading Icq.exe but when i saved it this is what it came out as ICQ_v1.0_PocketPC.zl9M35J0``,````$````__``+@`````` ```0```````````````````````````M`````````````````` ``V`````XN@X`M`G-;@!3,TA5&AI_R!P_F]G_F%M

I tried changing the extension from .zl9m35....etc to
.exe it won't work. I've used agent and outlook and they both come out the same. Help!!
