How to control AV Equipment thru 802.11

Just received my Axim X5/300mhz w/ 802.11b CF card. In short, I want to control the AV for my house using wireless network with PC at the AV Equipment. This would include source input changes, volume control, change radio stations, etc...

I figure the best way to do it is to configure a laptop/PC right next to the AV equipment to use IR and use remote software to access the PC wirelessly. I realize I can simply install Universal Remote control software on the Axim but I'm looking to have this work anywhere in our 802.11 network area.

Anyone tried this? Can anyone think of a better way to do it??

If your running something like winamp, through your home theatre setup, you can use RemoteAMP. It controls winamp through your WiFi, and works great. I own this product, and love it.

I was actually hoping for a server/client type of solution. The server end would go on the PC near the A/V Equipment, communicating with IR. The client installed on the PDA would have a remote control look to it whose actions are carried out by the server.

I realize I could remotely access the other pc with terminal services but that requires loads of scrolling... Is there a product similar to what I'm requesting?

Well, if i understand what your asking for, i'd try remotecommander from pebblespc. Its free, and available here.
