Review on the Fujitsu Seimens Pocket Loox .
Even tough it has been a loong time sense the Loox came out...I only got the chance to used it in this whole month of great new Pocket PC arrival from HP, Viewsonic, Toshiba and much more.
A review should be freashed and the product of the review shouldn't be old where people had been using and holding it, but hay....... even tough I love making reviews ,I'm not rich like the people from ZDnet.com or other company's that makes a product review right away when the product is available in this world we live in. I hope I didn't get anyone angry with my statement ...if so (oops!). So here goes.....
When I first saw the Loox, it was in a newspaper add(the add was so ugly). At that time the prices of all PPC are astronomically high. The Axim, Viewsonic and other PPC that had made all prices of PPC came down didn't existed at that time. I was aiming at that time for a Palm device which is more cheaper but still, I was hopping I can still afford a PPC. When I saw the Loox's picture in the add , I was like "Yuck! What a peace of crap this is! It is so ugly! Now I know it's a little bit shallow to judged it without even seeing the whole thing from a different perspective ,but it's so ugly!. But the ugliness of the Loox came to an end when I saw one on an shop call PDA Stop. The Loox was so gorgeous!! I had to have one ( but I didn't even buy one until now , I just borrowed a unit from a friend ). The design is so different from all other PPC which normally a square(sorry Toshiba) . I aseptically like the design of the IR. port which Fujitsu had build the IR. port pushed a little bit away from the body of the Loox which is nice because it make me fell that the IR. port can send anything about a mile which is so in saintly untrue, but hay...at least it's not as dumb looking as the Axiom's Ir. port which is soooooo small and it is placed in that black thingy on top of the Axim where it is even more harder to locate( where's the first time I got the Axim I taught it didn't came with IR. port which would make it more stupider)(is that a word?).
It has been a looooooong time sense PPC came with dual expansion slot(when the loox's debut). At first I didn't know it came with dual expansion slot but when I saw that the SD slot where on the left side of the Loox , it make me kind a nervous thinking it had a CF slot , and at times wondering whether PPC would bring back the CF slot (which they did). Why did it make me nervous...well the Loox isn't as big as the ipaq h3xxx so it would make me so happy to have dual expansion slot with a slim design( which it has at that time) and some say that the Loox are more lighter then the Hp h3870!.I would love it if I can compare the Loox with my Axim but as you know by now I had borrowed this unit from my bud's and we agreed to trade my Axim's with his's Loox's for a while. The CF slot is a normal type of CF slot which is I/O compatible meaning you can put perperhesals such as WIFI ,Bluetooth and other lots of stuff in there. The SD slot....hmm...I really don't like the SD slot placed where it is in the middle side of the Loox where my hand would grip on it . It would me so nervous that I had to hold the Loox softly and carefully because if not , the SD card would pop out from the slot if you are holding it tightly and this would be a terrifying process if you are doing a backup with you're SD card. Like the Axim..the SD slot is not I/O , hmm.....sad. So you're SD slot is only limited with memory card's only.
I had stated that the reason I love the Loox mainly because of the Ir.'s shape and design . But some people would hated the design because like some other 90% of people who like there Ir. port on the upper side of PPC , the Loox's IR. is in the left side of the PPC but for me...I still love it. The IR. strength is pretty normal and normal means NORMAL meaning is doesn't have that cool consumer IR from HP's Ipaq which you can control you're TV across you're leaving room(so cool). Some might say'' I have a remote control in my house'' but doing so with you're PPC is way cooler and fun. So may be(MAY BE) the next generation of loox or other PPC would came out with consumer IR.
The scroll wheel is pretty normal. The wheel is like the scroll wheel that of a Clie. I don't know if I like the placed of the wheel because let me tell you first...my first PPC is the Axim, so because of the Axim's more different placed of jog dial(scroll wheel), I had been more fond of the jog dial on the Axim then other PPC which is placed higher then the Axim's jog dial where's the jog dial of the Axim is place in the middle of the Axim.
The Loox came with a standard 3.5mm haedphonejack which is pretty great because it is it is pretty easy to find and buy a haedphonejack with a 3.5mm hole which unlike the Hp h1910 which has a 2.5mm hadphonejack which is pretty hard to find. The Loox is the first dual expansion PPC that comes with Bluetooth(not the hp h2215!). You can switch on the Bluetooth by pushing a tab on the Wright side of the Loox which is pretty great sense it's the only PPC that have the option.
The design and shape of the Loox is widely bubble shape meaning it has a round top, bottom and other sides of the Loox( much more the same design as the Palm m130 and all other m1xx family) which is nice because you're hand wouldn't be to sore holding it like other PPC such as Toshi.....(opss!)
The cradle is nice but not as beautiful as the Axim's and it doesn't have another placed to charge a spare battery and don't think you can pull the Loox with one hand. You have to force it a little bit with you're hand and the other one by holding it.
It seems that I'm heating this devise with all the bad part ,well no ..... I only dislike(wow, nice one) the placement of the jog wheel, and the SD slot. I like the shape, size ,IR. and the dual expansion slot. NOW I am going to TELL you what I really hate about the Loox.
First it is a 600$ worth of PPC and the price is still ain't coming down (eventough the price came down with the debut of the Axim, I have seen it only down to about 50$ to 200$! Meaning the lowest price is about 400$!(overall market) Which you can get a new smaller HP h2215 which has new OS , smaller design, faster processor(100mhz buss)and more beautiful design with the same price). And eventough it is expensive the buttons icons are printed ones which of course would lasted for a couple of month's. The D-pad which is so crappy makes me want to throw the Loox. The D-pad of the loox is a 4-way(so not great) and it is sluggish as the Axim's D-pad(not as much tough) The Red and green stripe just besides the 4 button application makes it more look like a toy (which I hadn't notice when I am using it because the Red and Green stripes are fading!) AND now for the BIGGEST blow , for a 400$ to 499$ PPC the screen aren't as beautiful as the 199$ Dell Axim. The screen of the Loox can't even bit the old HP h3970. It can only bit OLDER PPC such as the Casio EM-100, Toshiba E550 and others. And!...yes there is another flaw that came with the Loox! The Bluetooth the came with the Loox are so much of a nightmare. I tried to recognized the Loox with one of the enabled HP Bluetooth printer but noooo!(it didn't even recognized it even if I placed the Loox near the printer). What's more mind blowing is the the specs indicate that the Loox came with a class 1 type Bluetooth meaning I can get a range for about 100meters but alas I didn't even get near 50meters. But I did tough get it to recognized my brothers t68i(that was 18 time worth of trying). And I don't think my printer nor the headphone has a problem because most of Loox's users are complaining about the crappy Bluetooth.

So with nice design, Bluetooth,Dual expansion slot, would I recommend it? . No! For 399$ and eventough IF the Loox comes with PPC 2003 I would not buy it. I better of buying the HP h2215. So I am returning the Loox back to my friend earlier.
-Pros

*Bubble design makes holding the Loox not a pain
*1400mAh battery(not as powerful as the Axim's 1440mAH and the Acer's 1500mAH but it is nice)
*some indicates that that the Loox has optimse a little bit on the xscale processor so it's more faster
-Cons
*Expensive for an old devise
*Printed icons on buttons
