X51v, TTN5.21 and CF GPS???
Hi! Most of the posts I have found on these forums have to do with the X51v and Bluetooth devices, but I am running my X51v with Tomtom Navigator 5.21 and I have a Globalsat HC-337 Compact Flash GPS card. The weird thing is, the TT software installed and seems to run fine, the CF GPS installed and ALSO seems to run fine as it DOES work in my aviation GPS software (Pocket Navigator) but Tomtom 5.21 refuses to recognize ANY GPS no matter how many times I try to tell it that it IS there.
Dell says that it is Tomtoms problem (which I do believe given the CF GPS works in the other program), Globalsat says that they don't have any idea why Tomtom wouldn't see it, and Tomtom support flat out says they will NOT support any troubleshooting the Axim X51v - end of conversation.
I see many folks here have gotten TTN5 running with their bluetooth GPS, but I do NOT want a second device to lug around and worry about charging up all the time. I also saw that someone else in here could never get the Globalsat 337 CF GPS working in this sam configuration, but can ANYBODY TELL ME PLEASE. Globalsat website hints that their SD-502 Sd GPS card may be an option since it is Mobile 5 tested... any thoughts?
WHAT Compact Flash, OR SD card GPS WILL work with the X51v AND Tomtom Navigator 5.21??? I REALLY prefer a card capable of SIRFIII, but at this point I hope somebody can tell me what cards are for sure working with this combo. ANY help appreciated!!!! THANKS
Fred

Hi Fred
sorry can't help ya here,
never did get mine to work, ended up buying a tomtom bluetooth gps, £72 i could have done without spending, especially as i had a perfecty good cf gps.
I agree with dell on this, its a tomtom problem, which no doubt will be fixed when an upgrade is available.

This my sound strange, but try configuring the CF GPS as if it was a cable option and select the other NMEA.
The names of the devices to select from in TT5 does not always reflect the one to use.

Same Here!
Unfortunately I am having exactly the same trouble! I have searched many, many, forums over the last couple of weeks for a hint at how to get the CF card up and running on tomtom 5.21.
Drifter - unfortunately using the 'Other NMEA GPS' option does not help, any other thoughts would be great.
I can't believe it is beyond the wit of man to make TT5.21 work with a CF card (just the wit of this particular man).

Ya, it just doesn't work...
Drifter, a funny thing about configuring it as a "cable" is that TTN5.21 does not OFFER that option under "other CABLE NMEA device" as it lists on their web support. It only offers "OTHER NMEA DEVICE" and when you tap that, it does show a CF card but when you tap on that TTN5.21 just does NOT see a GPS device..... SO.... I am shopping for another GPS receiver, but do not want a bluetooth. I am seriously eyeing the other Globalsat SD GPS that claims compatibility with WinMobile5.. The good folks at Globalsat were very friendly but frankly shrugged their shoulders and said they had NO idea if it'd work. So I will probably buy one just to try it.... (sigh)
If anyone KNOWS of a CF GPS that DOES work on the X51v AND TTN5.21 let me know! THANKS!

I had a Haicom 305III (SiRF 3) CF card working fine in my iPaq 3660. I then got a Dell Axim X51v and had real problems with the card. It turns out that even though it is a new device it doesn't support WM5. Haicom said they didn't have a driver for WM5 (and still don't). I could get the device to work with OziExplorerCE on the Axim as the supplied Haicom driver did create a COM7: device which I could connect to. Couldn't get anywhere with TT5.21 though. As I also run Pocket Anquet and this wasn't working either - it was time for a new GPS device. I bought a TomTom GPSII (SiRF 3 chipset). I wish I had done this before - really nice unit.
BTW the battery life of the TT GPS is significantly longer than the Dell and not having the CF GPS card improves the DELL battery life. (Of course it's not long enough for most walks (out for 5-7 hrs at a time - but I only use the Axim for quick position checks against a map). Never-ever think about going out for walks without a paper map and compass - h/w isn't that reliable yet.
For in-car use there is no problem as the ARKON holder I use supplies power to the AXIM and the TomTom GPSII (plus spare power for mobile 'phone or other device).

I have a Haicon wired GPS and I was experiencing problems because TT5 does not recognise the GPS. Then I found that the name of the port (Serial Port on COM1) on the Axim was writen in cyriclic characters. I changed that and now is working, but I still having some problems. Some times the TT5 does not recognise the GPS, then I disconect the GPS, not switching off the Axim, and I reconnect it. Normally the GPS is recognised after doing that.

At Last!
All,
This little App has solved all my problems, it is called TTN5botand can be found here:
personales.ya.com/beemer/ttn5boten.htm
I was running a Safecom CF GPS with my Axim X51v and TT5.21 (or rather.... I wasn't). I could not get the bloody thing to recognise the GPS to save my life until I stumbled across this bot in one of the many forums I've visited.
It seems to work by reducing the amount of processing power needed by TT5 and instead allowing the Axim the brainpower to actually see I have a GPS card installed. Wonderful!!
Hope it helps,
Zap.

No joy Zap
Nope, that little bot program DID start Tomtom, but it still can't see my CF GPS... No idea what Sirf III capable CF GPS will work.
