Going nuts with"temporary conditions"

AximX51v/Internet weirdness:
On my Axim, When I click "site" to see how many sites are available(I'm at my computer at home), I see there are 15 or 20. I can't connect to my own router (with the Axim)because it's encrypted - works fine with my laptop -and it is a problem that has thwarted Dell and Verizon help desks, so I gave up. I don't need it at home because I have connectivity with the Laptop.
So.
My Ax will connect to the internet via one of the many other available sites(I am still at home) about 25% of the time. The rest of the time I get a message that says MSN cann ot connect because of "temporary conditions." What does that mean? Then other times I get a message telling me that my "settings" are not right, so I fiddle & fool around changing from "Work" to "Internet" here and there - God knows in what order or combination - and eventually I connect. When I am out and about I do better, I hook up most of the time. But there must be correct settings that will work every time, no? I would love to know what they are. I hate the idea of having an expensive toy that will work only part of the time.
BTW I still have not figured out how to sync my Ax with Outlook 2003. I get a message saying that the Profile has been changed and that I need ti open Outlook with the correct "Profile."
Sounds illegal.
