Is Dell Lying to me about IR

I read the reviews on the Micro-Innovations (Pocketop) kIR keyboard and picked it up at CompUSA last week. I could not get the unit to work in the Regular Vertical position. If I turned it on it's side (soft reset every time) it works or if I turn it upside down so the IR port is on the bottom it works too. But right side up if I get 3 inches away it stops responding. I called Dell Tech support today and was told that the IR port is only designed to work 2 - 3 inches and that is it! Has everyone else that uses an IR keyboard hwav to have it sideways or upside down. Or do I have a problem with my Axim that Dell is refusing to acknowledge?
I tried the keyboard on a Palm M500 and it works up to 10 inches away - so i knom that it is not the keyboard.

well i foudn out that the IR isnt very strong. I DLed a program that allowed me to use my axim as a universal remote.... it didnt work that great, but i did have to be pretty close the the TV to get any respnose....

Infrared on PDAs are not very strong. As Starscream has pointed out, you have to be close to an IR receiver to use a remote control software. There are remote control extenders out there, but none are designed for the Axim as of yet.

The only Pocket PC, or PDA for that matter, that has an industrial strenght IR is the HP iPaq 5400 series.

I have the Pocketop Keyboard and I can get it to work 5 or 6 inches away my Axim. I find the biggest problem with the vertical position is aligning the keyboard and the reflector mirror on the stand. I ususally end up using the horizantal position to do most of my typing. It seems to work best that way.
