For those of you that use AT&T Wireless Service with mMode, you can connect to the internet using your phone as the modem, either with Bluetooth or IR (I used IR to test it). I have to say, it's pretty damn cool! I'm not sure how quickly the data usage will amount, but for a few times here and there, it might be well-worth your playing and paying!!!

First, you'll need to get the AT&T Mobile Connection software here:
http://support.attwireless.com/awswls/supp...rt/download.jsp

I downloaded the Professional version for PocketPC, not the Enterprise version for PocketPC.

I have the Sony Ericsson T68i. To make this work, I had to enable its IR port, then I manually had the AT&T Mobile Connection software find the modem/phone via IR. At first, the configutaration wizard didn't find it because I didn't have my phone's IR port turned on.

After downloading and installing the software, it's pretty easy to get connected. Just follow the wizard on first load of the software on your PocketPC, and then Connect. Once you connect, you can fire up your Internet Explorer or any other internet-based software.

Let me know if any of you try it out. I think this software also works with other mMode phones from AT&T, like the Motorola T720, Motorola Timeport P7382i, Nokia 8390, and the Siemens S46 Multi-band phone.

The software's manual states it will work with: Compaq iPaq with ARM SA1110 and version 1.69 ROM, HP 540 and 560 series PocketPC. Of course, I have a Dell Axim X5 400MHz, and it worked fine for me. I'd assume this software will also work with the Toshiba e740 and others out there that have PocketPC2002, maybe even the older version of PocketPC OS.

This is great, but the data service they have is really quite expensive as it is per KB you receive. I had heard that in using a cell phone as a modem you could just use your "minutes" if you call into say an RAS connection at work and then use their Internet access. Probably a lot slower connection, but wow what a savings. I cannot imagine "surfing" this way, but if it were weather, flight, map info your were getting it would be reasonable. I would also possibly like to access other contractors web sites that I can only get to thru the companies firewalls. I was originally thinking of getting the Pocket Pc Phone edition till I found out about the split between "Voice" at ~$40 a month and the "Data" at a minimum of $20 a month. The $20 does not get you very many KBs either. The Rep told me that his company was working on a combined plan, but that it would still add up to about the same cost. I am hoping I can find a way to just use minutes. Anyone tried this?

My kb charges aren't too high... they have 3 or 4 different plans as to how much data you can get. I think it's like none, 1MB, 4MB, and 8MB for 2.99, 7.99, 12.99, and 19.99, respectively.

Here is a grid comparing them all:

OK first off let me just say there is nothing that can compare to the axim, for under 500 bucks I have an MP3 Player, a portable web browser and email client. I mean come on how cool is it to be able to copy over MP3's onto a CF or SD card plug in some head phones and rock out at work . Plus I purchased a CF Bluetooth card for my Sony Ericsson T68i (great phone IMHO). ANYWAY therein lies my problem, maybe its just me but I can only use IR to synch up phone numbers, I would be tempted to believe something was up with Bluetooth if it wasn't for the fact that anything else works flawlessly, (Bluetooth gaming, browsing, email, etc.)

HEEEEEEEELP!

You have exhausted everything to get the Bluetooth to work?

Did you turn ON the bluetooth from within the phone? Menu: 8-3-4-1. Turn it on.

Also, you may have to manually configure the AT&T connection software to find the bluetooth device.

Pretty sure I exhausted everything, I set Btooth to on on both the Axim and the T68i, created the bond and for using the GPRS service it works great. But, the minute I try to sync numbers with it, it can't make the connection. I know they see each other because it asks you to select the connected device from the list. And my phone or PPC shows up in the list depending which side I'm sending from. The problem occurs in the actual sending it gets to the sending point and times out.

Have you searched Google (look, it's to the left!) for Axim syncing with T68i?

I tried, but perhaps you could tweak your search a bit.
