Thanks so much for the information, although, to be honest, I'm nervous about upgrading ROMs. If I do decide to go for it, which ROM has had best results with Axim x51v running WM5. Can you please point me to a tutorial on step-by-step procedure for downloading and installing?
In a last desperate attempt to find an easier solution, I combed the Microsoft Knowledge Base and found KB838989* (link below) which almost describes my problem perfectly:
"When you connect a Pocket PC handheld device to a USB 2.0 hub
or turn off the device and then turn it back on while the device is still connected to the USB 2.0 hub, Windows may not redetect the device. This problem may also occur with other USB devices that have pending transfers if the device is disconnected and then reconnected, or if the device is turned off and then turned back on while it is still connected to the USB 2.0 hub."
I'm not using a USB hub, but I
do have problems with other USB devices (besides the PDA) such as my camera when I disconnect it during transfer. I have a strong gut feeling that this is the problem and that the currrently installed system files (such as usbport, etc) are the source of the problem. The only problem is that I already have SP2 installed, and when I tried to execute the file windowsxp-kb838989-X86-ENU.exe on my PC, it says that the usb system files I have installed are more recent than the ones in the update file. I wish that I could somehow use the usb system files in the hotfix update but I don't know how to find them and install them manually.
I'm just figuring this stuff out on my own (obviously I'm not a techie), so please excuse me if I'm using incorrect jargon. But if the above makes sense, I would be most appreciative for any suggestions on pursuing this (easier) avenue to a solution.
