Upgrading Outlook 2002

I'm using Outlook 2002 on my Axim X51v and PC because that was part of the software that came with the Axim. It's working well on the Axim, synching without a problem using Active Sync. HOWEVER, I'm having increasing and constant problems using Outlook 2002 on my PC since it's no longer supported by MS. Of course MS just suggests upgrading...which is a substantial expense. I have no need for anything but Outlook itself. I'm not wedded to Outlook except by default. Will ActiveSync synchronize another email program?

Does anyone have a viable suggestion?
