Slow x51v internet an mail download
Its a rare thing when drifter asks a question.
As an avid axim user, I grew up with and have owned many x5's x3,x3i... etc. I loved the convenience and internet speed of the x50v when used in WiFi mode.
After having it in store for a while, I finally made the plunge and pushed my new x51v into use assuming no real difference to my trusty x50v which I sold off.
BOY WHAT A MISTAKE !!!!
I'm on ROM A12 and running a wifi set up with minimal ( read no) security and SSID broadcast. My family laptops, desktop and every single axim I have ever tried had no problems with the setup so all is well from that end.
The x51v finds the signal and connects, with all bars full ( strong signal) but it takes forever to load a web page and to down load emails works only occasionally and then is painfully slow.
Done all the normal things. reset, upgraded / reflashed the ROM. made sure no other programs running in the background etc.
The unit is fine for GPS use and syncing, but WiFi connection ??????
Give me back my trusty x50v.
Any ideas anyone. Have I missed something ????
PS, before anyone comments, yes I run an open WiFi system. When I travel I occassionally piggy back off open systems to download essential emails and have absolutely no problem in offering access to any one who needs to do the same. I for one hate paying Euro 15,00 for 1 hours internet use in European hotels.

Lot's of browsing can clog, leave lots of temp files on the ax, it is worth habitually cleaning out temp files. You can check this by looking at program and storage memory availability, or using a third party app, [I use pocket mechanic] to move/relocate cache files to card. Also you may want to look at what programs you have installed to main memory, and this is obvious and I don't know why I'm telling you this, But the more space on the axim the more free memory to process your requests. Also you may want to look at an app for closing programs down, like magic button or the close feature in SPB pocket plus.Having things run in the bckground definetiley slows down internet. What Browser are you using. I've got the Opera Beta, and PIE, with Pie plus. Opera is slawer but supports more features. PIE with Pieplus is marginally slower than my laptop.
Email without attachments is slow, I can't imagine downloading full email? Unless I need to read to I just load Titles

Valid comments but this is from " new", very little browsing, plus I do regularly clean out the temp folders and history. The only programs installed to main memory are TomTom , and i'm showing 136MB free, so I'm not short on space. - 4GB of cards also, are also only 25% used
The browser is the standard one built into the x51v rom

Only used the X51v so can't do any comparisons but...
I'm at work, working behind a firewall and a slow link (1M bps broadband) and it's taking a little over 5 secs to find, open and display the BBC PDA home page - it's around 240K in size according to the stats. It's similar sort of rssponse for ebay and msn
I wouldn't call it slow.
Added some info:
X51v on A12. Authentication = Shared, Ecryption WEP. Can't use open I'm afraid.

Sorry, I use open network with wifi, and with 16% signal it is slow but not that slow, with BT to my phone, almost matches my laptop browsing to frequent sites like here. When I think of painfully slow browsing from ax I think over 20 seconds to load a page.

What speed do you get from download.com's speed test Drifter? I use encryption on my home network and get a steady 1360 Kb/s nearly every time. What are your results?
Remember that WM5 is always going to be slower than 2003 because of its method of using ROM and RAM with an emphasis on not losing data rather than the emphasis on speed in 2003. Were you using 2003 on the X50? Some tweaks are available to speed up WM5 in general.
Did you install the driver rollup package available from Dell? Some slight wifi improvements were included with it, but I think they were only applicable to traversing multiple access points.

The driver rollup did the trick. I assumed this would have been incorporated into the latest rom which seemed to be newer than the rollup.
I ran the speed test and got a 560mbps on the ax, compared to 980 mbps on my laptop, well short of what you are finding Mahstah. Clearly your WiFi systems are much faster in the US than in europe. I suppose that is what comes of using the French modems ISP's give free.
