X51v Using CF Cards Type I and Type II

I was reading on the web for the standards of the CompactFlash cards and it appears the the CF Type II slot in the X51v will allow use of either the Type I or the Type II cards.

The Type II Cards and Slot is 5mm wide. The Type I Card and Slot are 3.3mm wide.

According to the articles I read, one can use the Type I card in a Type II slot, but not the reverse. The Type II card will not fit into a Type I slot.

Question: Is anyone out there using the Type I card it their Axim X51v? Does it work okay?

Sure. Some folks are disturbed by the remaining gap, but it's of no real consequence. Some people "patch" the gap with foam attached to the card, or tape, etc.

Thanks. I installed a 1GB CF Type I and it works fine and shows up in the System memory listing.

Now a question.

Does the X51v use this memory as overflow when it runs out of internal memory?

Or can I use it by using the file manager to set up directories/folders like in normal Windows XP... manually?

How do I navigate to get there and also set up and use. For example, like storing photos there for a slide show or maybe Excel files from my PC loaded over there.

The CF card is not used as RAM. You can set up directory heirarchies like in XP. Although the WM5 File Explorer can do this, I find its single pane interface to be less than optimal.

I use Resco Explorer, it's a great program that builds many more options into tap and hold and allows panes for browsing like XP's Explorer program. It costs money though, if you want something for free that's a little better than the built-in File Explorer you could use Pocket Explorer. It's free and available here.

Most CF cards are CF I and work great, some say the gap lets dust in, but I think it lets extra heat out.
The cardworks like a flashdrive or hard drive as extra storage.
You can store pics, movies, music, or docuements on it. Or install programs, move caches to it.
Anything put use it as RAM. The only way to upgrade ram is to send it to PocketPC Techs for an 64 mb upgrade.

Sorry for the late reply. My computer went south on me and just now getting it back in order and working. The entire hard drive had to be reloaded.

Thanks.. I have a CFII in there. 1GB and give me lots of space for photos and videos. What a blast.

One note: I notice every now and then that the CF card is not accessible until I do a soft reset. If I go to Start > Settings > System > Memory and tap on the Storage card tab at the bottom, it will say that there is not card in the slot. But it's there. I do a soft reset and it appears again.

Have you experienced this problem? How to fix and make the card permenantly available is a mystery to me.

Any help is appreciated.
