Syncing madness
I guess I have only myself to blame for the mess I'm in now.
For a while, having been able to sync just fine with a cradle, I decided I wanted to try syncing over bluetooth, which didn't work at all. Using instructions I've found on the net never seemed to get Activesync on my axim to give me the option of syncing over bluetooth, it would always tell me there were no devices which offered syncing over bluetooth available. Furthermore, the axim only offered COM7 and COM8 as incoming and outgoing ports, and even when I set up a port on my computer named COM7 or COM8, nothing ever seemed to work.
We'll let that problem be for now, because in the process of trying to get bluetooth working, I deleted my current relationships with the pc and the axim, and now I can't even sync via usb anymore! The pc no longer recognizes my axim.
And, curiously, whereas before when I connected the cradle to my laptop (without the power cord attached to the cradle), it would charge my axim regardless of whether the axim was on or off, now my axim only charges if it's off.
Was I so wrong to want to expand my axim's wireless capabilities? Will I forever be lost in syncing hell?

1. The com ports refer to the axim, and your PC needs to have Bluetooth enabled and be paired with the axim. The normal wlan wifi on PC/laptop cannot be connected to with bluetooth.
2. Try uninstalling activesync and reinstalling, then reconnect axim and you should have the new partnership wizard start.
3. Normally on just a usb connection axim doesn't charge when on.

1. LOL I wasn't trying to form a bluetooth connection over LAN, I have a bluetooth dongle for my laptop and have several other bluetooth devices paired to it (head sets, cell phone, etc.) and was able to get the axim paired with the laptop, and yet still, the only services that show up on the axim are "Serial Port" and "Wireless stereo," never Bluetooth syncing...file transfer works just fine though...
2. Just tried uninstalling and reinstalling, no luck
3. Thanks, didn't know that. I vividly remember the orange charging light coming on whenever the axim was in the cradle and connected to the laptop, even when it was on, but I might be mistaken.

Greetings LITH-
1. You need to select the serial port option on your PC and assign it a port number. You then need to assign that port number to sync via BT in ActiveSync on your PC. The Axim also needs to be set up, paired, and the ActiveSync service selected. Then the BT port number assigned to the pair on the Axim needs to be configured in the Axim's ActiveSync settings.
See here: Axim X51v Bluetooth Sync, File Transfer, and Internet Browsing Guide
3. I agree with Pedah here, the power light should not turn on when the cradle is unpowered.

How's this for a denouement? I downloaded Bluesoleil, since that is the bluetooth stack used in Mastah's instructions (I had heretofore been using Toshiba's Bluetooth stack, with no luck). Paired my axim with no problem, Bluesoleil set up the COM port, went into Bluesoleil's My services>Properties and clicked the "autostart service" check box under the "information synchronization" tab, and *PRESTO*, "Activesync" finally appeared as a option for my computer on my PDA!!
I'm able to connect to and explore my PDA via bluetooth, but syncing still isn't happening for some reason...maybe I need to fiddle around with Zonealarm or something...
I'm still left wondering, why was setting everything up sooo much easier with Bluesoleil than with Toshiba's bluetooth software?
BTW, as far as I know, syncing over the cradle still doesn't work, haven't tried it since setting up my bluetooth stuff...

Do you have any partnerships in activesync now?

I've seen problems with the Toshiba BT stack in the past for laptops. It doesn't always play nice with AS.

When the axim is connected with bluetooth, the Activesync window comes up on my laptop asking to create a partnership, but then at the end when it is saving the partnership settings, I always get a window saying that the settings couldn't be saved...
After that, I'm still connected but listed on the activesync window as "guest"...
