Folks,
I noticed many of you were experiencing the EXACT same problem as I had. Like this posting:
USB syn/charging cable
Axim x50/x50v/x51/x51v simply not charging up and losing battery charge when in use even though hooked up to a car charger. This is primarily due to the fact that these Axim PDA's have much higher resolution displays than other brands and LCD display is the #1 battery consuming device in a PDA.
I spent a LOT of time searching for a solution and I'm happy to report one. What you need is a Car Charger that supports 2.0A output current (on a 12~24V DC input and 5V DC output). Standard "USB synch cable + Cigar Charger head" type product like the one I had will not work since USB interface does NOT allow high current drives (most products @ 500mA ~ 1.0A output). There just is not enough "juice" out of these chargers to support x50/x51 series power consumption.
I initially bought a USB data cable + car charger product on eBay that only had 450mA output current and it not only failed to charge my x50v when ON & charging but it generated this very annoying screen flicker if I did not set the brightness to the same low level between Battery & Ext. Power modes.
Well, I did some research and found a GREAT product that offers 2.0A output on 5V DC input (and with overcharge protection & LED indicator) on eBay. Best part is it's only U$5.90 including shipping!!
I just received this product recently and tested it out in worst case condition: While driving with my x50v turned on and my GPS receiver CF card working, I maximized the display brightness setting then depleted the battery down to 10% charge. Once I hooked up this new car charger (no USB), it charged my x50v w/o a hitch back to 100% in 30-min and no flickering!

One thing to note is that you need to make sure you use MSN chat service with this eBay Seller (Anthony @ e2_shop) to confirm that the right 2.0A output charger is being shipped for your order. Seller is located in H.K. but they shipped the charger on Friday and it was delivered to me (in MA) the next Monday. I educated Anthony that this was a major problem that his products can help resolve. This auction shows a picture with label showing "2.0A output". I was absolutely impressed with his service as he followed up over 2 weeks' time to find the right 2.0A charger to ship me (he does carry a mix of 500mA, 1.0A, and 2.0A versions). He now knows this "niche" and he's increasing his procurement of 2.0A chargers.
If you have any questions for me, just drop me a PM message and I'll respond. Hope this helps out many of you experiencing the same problem. Enjoy!
