Serial cable for configuring cisco switches

Hi

I found some info on what I want to do on this site but it was not clear on the exact cable I needs so I will ask the question.

What I want to do is to be able to use my axim x51 with a serial cable to configure cisco swicthes, routers. I normallyl do this with my laptop and a serial cable - usinig windows terminal and a serial cable I configure a session for 9600 baud 8N1 and then conncet to the switch or router .

Some of the posts mentioned converting 12volts to 5volts ? Do i need to do this is If just want to serial into a router or swithces ?

It's tough to tell if that cable will talk with Cisco hardware because I don't know the Cisco serial input pinouts vs. a standard serial pinout. If the serial port on the Cisco is standard (not true for many programmable switches/firewalls) you could use that cable and telnet software such as Cambridge's vxHpc.

If the pinout is not standard, you'll have to make your own serial cable by splicing the cable into a custom D-shell connector by following the pinout specifications for the X50/X51 from this site.

If it is a standard serial connector on the router then you will need a null modem between the AXIM serial connector and the CISCO router serial port. Both the AXIM and Cisco serial ports are DTE and will be set up to talk to DCE.
