Active Sync. Repair Install.

When trying to conduct a repair installation of Activesync I am getting a message saying that I don't have the following necessary file:

{7BEB2120-A08C-46EA-906A-9ADAF57B3763}.msi

I was able to install activesync normally, but apparently need to repair install if I want to use windows media player 11. How terrible is this?

Activesync repair install

Sorry about not putting in any more info.

I am using active sync 4.5, but had the error on 4.2 as well before trying the upgrade (I thought perhaps it might fix things)

I have an axim x51
rom version A12
windows xp sp2

I was able to sync before putting WMP 11, but not since and have tried rolling back to version 10 with no luck. I have tried enabling and disabling advanced network functioning and have repaired my pst files. When I run the troubleshoot I get no errors or issues that need to be resolved. Just that the device needs to be connected. When advanced network functions are disabled it does not do anything but sit there and taunt me with silence.

Can you post a screenshot of the error or post verbatim the title bar and body text from it? Can you sync at all?

Try uninstalling AS, making sure the Program Files folder is deleted, making sure the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Activesync folder is deleted, and clearing out all temp files in your profile %profilename%\Local Settings\Temp. Then reinstall 4.2. Allow any firewall requests. Let us know if you have success.

This as probably irrelevant, but I did a search on both computers I'm sinking with and the file above not found when copied and pasted, I thought I'd copy and paste and attach with the destination, couldn't find it.

repair install continued

I tried doing the same thing on a friend's computer to no avail. I was able to uninstall 4.5 and reinstall and repair install 4.2. So that went fine, but then I couldn't sync. So I tried installing 4.5. That worked, but when I tried to repair install it I received the same message as before.

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package {7BEB2120-A08C-46EA-906A-9ADAF57B3763}.msi

It is looking in C:\documents and settings\jeff (me)\ localsettings\temp

my firewall has been thoroughly prepared and I have literally scoured all of the help pages I can find to make sure that I am not missing something small and vital. Since it worked before media player 11 I am convinced I fixed everything else. What happened to the package is a mystery. I deleted a bunch of unused files from my computer two months ago, but it shouldnt have caused all this I would think.

I think my girlfriend might break up with me over this... that might not be such a terrible thing for other reasons, but I am as serious as a heart attack that this is the moby dick of my existence. the white whale. the snuffalupagous.

These instructions are from MS's knowledgebase and apply to Access, although the error is very similar to what you're getting. I have gone through the instructions and replaced references to Access with Activesync. This is what I would try in your situation. Before attempting to reinstall ActiveSync, redownload a new copy to ensure there is no corruption in the exe.

From: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838983

Method 2: Manually remove the installation of the ActiveSync runtime application.
To manually remove an ActiveSync runtime application, follow these steps.

Note To follow these steps, you must know how the ActiveSync runtime application package was created.1. Remove the Windows Installer configuration information for the ActiveSync runtime application.

You can use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to remove the Windows Installer configuration information for the ActiveSync runtime application. To do this, follow these steps.

Important If you use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall other programs that are running on your computer. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve the problems that may result if you use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility incorrectly. Use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility at your own risk.

For additional information about the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
290301 Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility a. Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, and then install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on your computer.

Caution Before you install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, read the instructions and the warnings.
b. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Install Clean Up.
c. In the Windows Installer Clean Up dialog box, click the name of the ActiveSync runtime application that you are trying to remove under Installed Products, and then click Remove.
d. In the Windows Installer Clean Up dialog box that displays a warning message, click OK.

2. Remove the files and the registry keys on your computer that were installed by the ActiveSync runtime application.

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility removes only the Windows Installer configuration information from the ActiveSync runtime application. To remove the application from your computer, you must remove the files, the folders, and the registry keys that are installed by the application. To do this, follow these steps: a. Remove all shortcuts that were created to start the ActiveSync runtime application.
b. Use Microsoft Windows Explorer to locate and to delete the files and the folders that were included when the deployment package for the ActiveSync runtime application was created.
c. Use Registry Editor to locate and to delete the registry keys that were included when the deployment package for the ActiveSync runtime application was created.

Repair install thank you

Awesome. Thank you. As soon as I get a chance I will try this and let you know how things work.

You did not include a step by step on how to keep my girlfriend from leaving me over my activesync obsession. Maybe that should be a different post...

Love what you guys do. Its a great thing. Thanks again.

If she leaves you over a computer problem then you should let her go. Sounds like a control threat.
