Unhappy Missing start menu icons

This seems to happen all the time:
suddenly I'll notice that my start menu icons are gone: see pic below:

You can see how many of my icons are replaced with the generic "window" icon. [example, for calc98, photo viewer, REsco file explorer, etc.]
this makes my favorite items tougher to recognize when in a hurry looking at the screen. I want my icons back!

If I go to start | settings | menus
then UNselect an item, such as activesyn, then SELECT it again, then save,
when I access the start menu again, my icons are back.
But it won't last - some time later they are gone again.

Anyone know why?
Anyone have a fix for this so it doesn't keep happening every day?

Did you remove your memory card and lose the icons for programs that are installed on it? A soft reset should cure this.

I have no doubt you're right - that when I remove my SD card (where lots of my programs are installed), that this results in lost icons. Haven't observed whether the soft reset fixes it. LIke I said, going to my menus settings and just doing a pseudo-save will bring them back.

I'll keep an eye on this and see. I guess that's just the way it is -- you're never supposed to remove the card once installed, I guess. I take mine out almost every day to do a backup.

Today I did rom update ( that I didn't need because of confusing link in another thread) and prompted to update, then backup I chose to backup everyting, I had bible software installed to CF card and all the books that went with it on SD. Did update no problem then restored backup, everything apparently till I tried to open a book. everything was still on SD but but program didn't know. Getting the Idea that if you change things around you disassociate files from main memory with cards. So removing SD and replacing probably confuses OS.

I was losing my icons as well, for programs I had installed on my CF card. Placing them on my high speed SD card solved problem most of the time, installing in to main memory on PDA solved it all the time.

THe icons only disappear after a soft reset, to get them back go:

Settings -> Menu the de-select and re-select one item in the menu this causes the device to refresh the menu.

I believe the issue comes from the time taken to read the cards at startup, either the drivers are loaded late in the startup process or they are not fast enough to respond as the device loads up.

Thanks
Steve
