Repairs for Axim x51v

The Situation:
I have an AXIM x51v with version 1 ROM and wanted to upgrade to version 12; however, when I tried to do this, my Axim would not perform a hard restart (which is needed for the upgrade). I contacted DELL, and they told me they would be happy to send me a replacement; but that there would be a nominal fee since I am 2-months out of warrentee. It turned out that the nominal fee was $499.
What I am Looking for:
While am disapointed in DELL and I don't feel like buying a new Axim, I do like my Axim and it works (but with a few glitches.) Does anyone know of a repair shop that might be able to upgrade my Axim? Any ideas for self-help?

There are some notes on this thread about upgrading to A12. I found that the "hard reset" step was not required (nor did it work for me). A12 loaded and it effectively hard reset, but the part in the instructions that said to manually hard reset wouldn't work.
