Dell Axim X51v VS UMPC's
So, I've been looking at the Dell Axim line and at UMPC's. What I have found is that a few UMPC's can run Windows XP at 500mhz or 550mhz and 128/256 minimum of RAM. What I am wondering is if there is any way The Dell Axim X51v could run Windows ME or XP on its 624mhz processor or even when it is overclocked. (I heard some one overclocked the processor to 700 something mhz). I know the Axim only has 64mb RAM, but would it be possible to run an older version of windows (ME or even 95) on the current hardware?

Absolutely not.
The desktop version of Windows would require a complete driver and OS overhaul to support Pocket PC hardware. I don't think MS is working on this...
It would be very cool though.
You should make your Axim/UMPC decision on how you plan to use the unit. Do you need full fledged XP or do you need a simpler pocket sized system to perform the essentials?

I think I'll probably wait a few more years before investing in a UMPC or beefed up Pocket PC because I want to be able to enjoy the four best elements of media: Music, Videos, The Internet.... and (well made) 3D games. The biggest category that I take into consideration when looking for a mobile device is: can it play games?. If yes, 3D, multiplayer games?, If yes again: can it fit in my pocket? Now I know what everybody would think here, the would say "buy a PSP" but I've been there and done that, and I want something even more powerful that perhaps runs Windows and plays windows games. For this kind of technology, I'll probably have to wait a couple more years for the PSP2 (?) or more powerful UMPC's

The PSP does in fact run Windows 95 and Linux. I can't say how well, but it's been done.

I know Windows XP can run with 64 MB RAM (I never would, give me 98 with my 64MB), but that is not the hardware limitation I speak of. You need custom software for the CPU chipset, GPU chipset, card readers, touchscreen, power button, sync port, etc etc.

Yeah, gotcha, I understand that the software would need to be custom designed and everything. I should have been clearer on my question, I was just wondering if the hardware alone, given the correct software, could run Windows XP/ME. I was just curious.
