Which maps you need depends on what you want to do with your unit.

You will need two components. An application and a source of maps.

For in-vehicle routing and navigation then you will want something like TomTom - which combines maps and s/w in one package.

If you are hiking / going-off road then you need a topological program. Here in the UK we have Anquet maps with excellent coverage of the UK at 1:25000 (very expensive) or 1:50000 (much more affordable). For you in the US I can't really suggest anything as I don't know that marketplace. But....

If you have lots of paper maps - or access to digital mapping (which I seem to recall is more affordable - sometimes free! - in the US) you may want to take a look at OZIExplorer / OZIExplorerCE (www.oziexplorer.com) it needs more work by you the user - but it really is a very nice piece of software. I'm not associated with them in any way but I have been a very happy user of the software from its early days in the 90's.

I see that the thread has taken a new turn, but just for completeness, as I was preparing to put the GPS back in the bag to send back, another eBayer who had bought the same gadget the day after I did responded to my email asking for advice - I tried it and it worked.
For the record :
- tick serial port
- auto-manage GPS
- GPS hardware port COM7
and it worked...
As I said before, why is it so difficult? Surely it's not over-difficult to put straightforward instructions in the box...?
Thanks to all of you for contributing. If I can answer anything I'll be glad to do so (and probably, as a new user, surprised if I know the answer).

Rather than start a new topic...
I've just upgraded to WM6.1 Pure version and everything works (as far as I can see) as it did on WM6.0 but once again I've lost Bluetooth connectivity with my GPS - a Polstar I-Geo Pro.
Would some kind soul please give me a rundown of their complete BT configuration - port settings, what's on and what's off...?
Many thanks in advance.

No, forget that - I fiddled and fiddled, com this and com that, and suddenly it connected. When I can be bothered I'll write down all the settings. For the moment I've had enough of Bluetooth...
