Question About Syncing

Just got my Axim X51v a few days ago and love it!

Just have a quick (and dumb) question. If I buy a usb travel sync cable, does the computer I connect it to have to have ActiveSync to allow internet access on my Axim?

Yes, you do need ActiveSync to access the internet when it's cradled. You will likely have wireless if you're travelling and won't need to cradle to get online.

Well at school I didn't get any signal even though I know there's an access point. Not sure what I can do to access that signal.

You will have to talk to your school's IT department to get access settings. Most schools have encrypted wireless.

I'm sorry, I was unclear. I can access it with my laptop, and it's unsecured (although we have to login once connected). But I am unable to get strong signals with my Axim X51v. Even in my house... I have my wireless router in my room, and if I go downstairs, I get a poor signal. Anyway to strengthen the wireless signal from my Axim?

Yes kaching is correct, you cannot increase the signal in the Axim but you can increase the signal in your house. You could get a better wireless router or use repeaters or wireless bridges to extend the signal as far as you want.

With repeaters and bridges you get slight lag over each node.

I've taken the Axim downstairs, and I lose connection

I've taken my laptop downstairs, and I get a good connection.

I shouldn't need better range on my router.

Your laptop may have a better s/n ratio than the Axim. You can view your s/n ratio in the WLAN client on the Axim and possibly in your wireless client software on your laptop. My laptop has a better s/n ratio than my X51v, but it has a nice antenna (and a plug for my cantenna).

The density of the walls and other solid objects in your house can significantly impact the wireless signal. Moving your wireless access point could help, but the most surefire way to get a better signal is to find a router with a larger broadcast range.
