Just got my Axim....Now What?

Okay, so I just got my Axim (gotta hand it to Dell, they said it would take till the 18th to get here, got here today)! Anyways, I am new to the handheld community, and need to know what are the basic things I should do first...I keep reading about flash updates and other updates that will cause all programs and stuff to be lost, so what should I do to get started?

Question two would be a list of programs that would be beneficial for me to have on the Axim. I will mainly be using this for contacts, internet, calendar, small office needs, and gaming. What are some good freeware (and not freeware) that would help me out? What are the best games, as well?

Next question would be a list of other great sites for software downloads?

LAst question would be what kinds of file will run on the Axim? I mean, canI just copy things off of my home computer (WinXP) and will they run on my Axim?

Lucky you.

Here is a ftp site with Pocket PC softwares for download; both free & not free.

If you have difficulty, go to the Main ftp site first and browse to the subdirectory "pdacentral", then to "filespocketpc".

Make sure you have ROM ver A06. There're instructions from Aximusers.com to download & upgrade.

For your desktop, you might want to download and install ActiveSync 4.1 from Microsoft. You need it to sync your X51v with your desktop/laptop.

For softwares, look for WM 5.0 compatible softwares to avoid OS issues. Most PPC 2003 softwares will run fine.

I think you'll like this forum. Check back often and read through the posts. You'll always find some tidbit you can use. I've had my x51v for almost 4 months now and still find uses for it.

You were asking about programs.

I've become a big fan of HanDbase 3.0. It's not free but you can customize it for a lot of uses and there are forms created and uploaded by other users that you can download for your use. You can browse it here.

After you've done your rom upgrade to A06. If you have any power/lockup issues youe may want to apply the active synch hack. You can do a search on this site.

You shouldn't have to update your ROM version. I just got my Axim as well and it shows it's running A06. To check...Start...Settings...System Tab...Then find System information icon and tap it. If it says ROM A06 you should be good.

As far as everything else you asked about...well as I am new I too am always discovering new things to use and haven't tried much yet. I do have a thread on screen protectors that seems to be helpful.

How about cases, what works best? I am thinking a hard one with a belt clip, but again, I know very little. I wish there was somewhere I could go look at them, haven't found anywhere yet.

And video clips or movies....what formats will the media player recognize?

Lastly, I am installing Avantgo (I had it on my Palm years ago and loved it). Any others like it or better?

1 thing I like to do is use the wifi througout the house with my wireless router allthough it has great range it picks up about 5 or 6 neighbors routers as well. There are many pay-per hour/day/month wireless sites that your dell will be able to pick up like starbucks/att and many free ones like hotels, just sit in front of one and turn on your wifi and find out for yourself ,surf the net in your car.

It's good to see Dell upgrade the ROM before delivering it. Mine came with ROM A01.

The screen protector is a good investment. I'm using the universal screen protector from Digital Concepts, got it from Office Depot. Dell forgot my order after 2 months of waiting.

I had an aluminum hardcase (extended battery version) from Dell. It comes w/ a belt clip. The internal padding provides dampening from shock. It holds two SD cards. Works great. Dropped my X51v a few times & no scratch!

If you look at any websites and decide to buy the Rhino Skin hard case w/extended battery support, as another thread you posted advised getting one, let me know. I got one with my order and I don't have or plan to use an extended battery. Sooo...I'll sell you mine for $20.00 w/shipping. Or to anyone else reading this message (lol.)
