ActiveSync recognizes Axim, no data xfer, DrWatson lockups
I hope you can help me out. I’ve had a new Dell Axim X51v two weeks and still can’t get it to successfully sync. At first, I was getting BSOD (usually PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA) every time I put the PDA in the cradle. I finally figured out I had to shut down ZoneAlarm. I found Microsoft’s tutorial on opening routes through firewalls, but I couldn’t get ZA to add wcescomm.exe to it’s approved list and the free version doesn’t have the entire “Expert Rules” section referenced in the article. I unchecked ZA from loading in MSConfig instead of uninstalling it.
Now a Windows Mobile-based Device consistently shows up under Network Adapters in Device Manager with no errors. Now I have two problems. First, the device tries to synch but nothing ever happens (green balls spins forever, ActiveSync says “Connecting..”, not “Connected”). Cradle connected or not, my system locks up on DrWatson.EXE every time Windows starts (the main function of this program is to put up those “Progam X Encountered an Error, Would You Like to Notify Microsoft” messages, it still locks up with the notifications turned off) and when I launch a processor intensive program like a game.
I did get the Axim to sync on a friend’s XP machine, I’m not sure what we did, but we finally got it to sync and installed the drivers (keyboard) that came with the device. I did a hard reset before trying to connect to my friend’s workstation, I did it again and uninstalled, rebooted, re-installed ActiveSync 4.1, and re-booted when the device didn’t immediately sync when I put it back on my PC. The problem still has to be blocked communication in my system, not the Axim
I’m a consultant and power user. I’ve install every free antispyware package known to man. My current suite includes SpywareGuard 3.51, SpyBot 3.4 (active TeaTimer protection disabled in favor of MS AntiSpyware), AdAware Personal 6, MS AntiSpyware, McAfee 7, Free AVG (inactive). I’ve tried de-activating all active protection. The Microsoft Article mentions opening up TCP Ports 990, 999, 5678, 5721, 26675, and UDP port 5679. Could one of these ports have been blocked in the registry (by one of the above programs or another security app I’ve evaluated) even with active protection off?
Is it possible some USB chipsets are not compatible? I’ve a Socket 478 Abit VT7 (VIA PT880), 3.2Ghz Prescott, 2Gb DDR, Radeon X800 XL graphics adapter.
I downloaded and installed ActiveSync 3.8 from MS, and installed it in place of 4.1. Now the Axim is not recognized at all.
