AXIM X51v and SEAGATE 8.0gb Drive

New Axim X51v user, read a number of reviews about the CF (ORANGE) SEAGATE Photo Drive and Axim with good results. Received an order today but arrived a CF (WHITE) SEAGATE 8 GB ST1.2 Drive (For Embedded Application Only) instead and it does not appear to be recognised

Welcome to AximUsers GarethTS.

Have you tried repartitioning/reformatting the drive using your desktop/laptop computer? Format it as FAT32. Some CF drives are manufactured specifically NOT to work in devices other than the ones they were intended for, ie mp3 player or digicam.

Try configuring the drive on your main computer first.

Thanks for your prompt response and Welcome to the forum.

I have tried that, and again my desktop fails to recognise it. The card reader appears to attempt to access it but then asks to insert disk. I suspect that the (For Embedded Application Only) means it has been modified in some way.

The company I bought it from actually have the Orange Photo Drive pictured, and I thought that was the type I was buying, which has good reviews. I think this one will be going back unless anyone has any other suggestions.

The Axim X51v though shows promise, apart from the minor software bugs and firewall sync problem, so I think I will enjoy the forum.

It sounds like the drive is either damaged or a pull from another type of device and was manufactured to only work in that device. This is a tactic of microdrive manufacturers that prevents people from buying an mp3 player for cheaper than the drive inside is worth just to scrap the mp3 player and keep the drive.

Quick update, thought I would try a new card reader after what you said, and yes the drive needed formatting, which I then did in fat32 and also added some files, great I thought. Axim still does not recognize drive so I tried a firmware update on the Axim just in case, still no success. The joy of computers!!!

Did you repartition it before formatting? Make sure it is a basic, not dynamic volume.

Again, it may not be usable in the Axim.

What is the best way to do it?
Do I need to buy software?

ps. Seagate have just advised me that apparantly this is an OEM supplied drive, so no help!!
