    SDHC card for Axim X51

Just bought an SANDISK SDHC card (I know, they don't work in the Axim) for my Dell Axim X51, Windows Mobile 5.0

So, before making the trip out to return the sucker, is there a way to get it to work ? I thought I saw a post about a guy who managed to get it to work by applying a patch. Couldn't locate said patch anywhere.

Also, the reason why I bought the SDHC cards in the first place was because my 2GB SD cards can be written to only once (apparently). They become read-only after the initial data write (I am copying some important folders on there). I checked the lock position on the card and everything.

    Any help is appreciated !

Link to the patch is in this post. As for your cards only being able to be written to once, that's a problem. They should be infinitely writable. You should be able to change the properties of files via a card reader attached to a PC.

hi, all, you will need a sd card to download the 'patch' onto, then copy onto your axim, once working do a full back up of your axim as it is quicker to do a back up restore than downloading and copy files again.

Thanks dontknow, will give that a whirl.

As far as being unable to read/write the SD card, that is, I believe a card reader issue (I hope). I just bought a Dynex card reader/writer and wanted to try this on a SDHC card but ran into this issue.

If I am able to read/write a 2GB SD card, I might go for that else I will take the plunge with the 4 GB SDHC.

Unless you physically move the lock switch on the SD card, it's ability to be rewritten xxxxxx times will not be altered, regardless of the ability of the card reader. I have a card reader that is at least 5 years old which adequately handles this function of SDHC cards, let alone normal SD cards. Either you have a faulty SD card or you have difficulty dealing with basic PPC functionality. If this is the case then even if they produce a 256GB SDHC card you will be scunnered. Please check the original instructions issued with your SD card.

PPC functionality ?! Well, I have been using SD cards right from their 128/256 MB days. But this is probably the first time I have used these cards for storing/reading data.

Here's the issue and this is on a Vista machine with its own issues with shadow drives and everything. The first time I tried writing to it (I am dealing with data files for a book scouting app which are constantly updated i.e. the file names are same for each data version), turned out fine with a really cheap (off of ebay) USb reader/writer. But every subsequent write failed. The strange thing was if I looked at the time stamp of the files just after writing to the SD card, it was the new version of the file. But I remove the card, re-insert it and boom ! it's the old timestamp i.e. the files are not updated. I have not been able to solve this mystery ..... At this stage, I noticed that I can neither copy nor delete files from this card. Faulty card ? Maybe. But the first was off of ebay (was going cheapo), the second one was off of Best Buy. Two cards from two different sources going kaput with the same issue ? Dunno, something fishy going one !

In the meantime, I bought this Sandisk Ultra II SDHC card because the genius at the app tech support said that they worked fine with Axim X51. I mean he forgot to tell me that it needs special drivers to get it to work .... because else i would have gone with SD Ultra II 2GB SD card (it's the only Ultra series card without SDHC)

Since then I have gotten a Dynex card reader/writer and I have updated the data files on it for the first time. Fingers crossed when I try and update data for the second time tomorrow or day after

There's an odd statement right there, what other use could you find for an SD card other than storing data? - keeping a small table level?

Its probably the card reader at issue, or perhaps a Vista issue, I've never had a problem with an SD card, SDHC only an issue when not supported, but the issue you're having is rather strange and not something I've ever experienced except if I've copied files from a CD/DVD and they end up as read only on the target drive.

OK Be Nice. I believe shalaka meant using a SD card as a hard drive on a computing device. I do think a review of the SD card instructions may help.

The timestamp thing seems interesting. When you talk about altering the files via card reader, as opposed to the axim. I'd like to know more about the application, please. I'm thinking these files need to be directly updated via the application on the axim, but I need more info

Not meaning to be rude at all. Sorry, if it came out that way, i apologize.

What I meant was I have been using SD card/ card-readers in cameras for quite a few years now (photos are data, I agree). And I don't believe that you had to do anything other than other than sticking those cards into a reader ..... in previous cases it used to be a camera, now it's a PDA and card-readers. I've never fiddled with the lock mechanism of the SD card.

I am using these card readers as data repositories (for a custom database) for a few months now, roughly the amount of time I have owned the Dell Axim X51 PDA.

The app is a books scouting tool from Asellertool. It functions in two modes, you can update data via the PDA (via synch) or via a card reader (much faster). Both the modes were showing up with the problem.

I did a download today morning and everything looks great, so the problem appears to be bad cards and card readers.
