Have you reset the axim ??. You might want to back up your axim to an sd or CF cardf and even try a hard reset
You may have already done so, but have you downloaded activesync 4.2 or 4.5 as these are much easier to use than earlier versions.
Windows firewall can cause problems as can spybot, zone alarm and other similar programs, so disable all of these, before you reinstall a fresh copy of activesync and try to connect your axim.
Finally, with the axim connected, taker a look at the device manager of the PC and see if any of the devices are showing an error message.
