Replacement Backup Battery

Does anyone know where I can obtain a replacement backup battery for an Axim X50V? Dell does not sell one, and is less than helpful. Also, how complicated is it to take the unit apart and replace the battery myself?

I believe that the X51V and X50V are almost identical. There are large numbers of sellers on eBay who have both standard (1100) and high-capacity (2200/2300) batteries for sale at a fraction of the Dell price. I have a high-capacity battery which cost me £18 ($25?) delivered. It came with a larger battery cover, as the battery itself is larger. It is sold as being suitable for X50V & X51V.
The battery is a straightforward job to replace.
Hope this helps.

I think the previous poster misread your question.

You cannot easily replace the backup battery yourself in an x50 , x50v, x51 or x51v as they are "built in ".

Although you can take apart the PDA, the difficulty is in obtaining a replacement battery which is not easy to find at all. As you have found, it is not sold as a spare part.

Your best solution is to contacty someone like PocketPCtechs.com to get a repair carried out.

As a matter of interest, what makes you think you need to replace the backup battery ???. HAve you tried leaving your PDA on charge for 24 hours

Yes, I've left it on charge for longer than that, and keep getting the message about the backup battery. As soon as I remove the AC, the memory is wiped. I have manage to obtain a replacement backup battery, and now I'm trying to get hold of the tools necessary to open it! I may take your advice and sent it to someone to replace it.

Axim X50/X50v backup battery: $15 + shipping/tax (if they charge). I suggest doing it yourself, I took apart the X51v without much trouble.

Unhappy

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I did manage to get a backup battery and the necessary tools, and took it apart and replaced the battery, which was by no means simple. BUT I still have a problem.

Now it is showing that the backup battery is normal and the main battery is fully charged. But as soon as I take it off mains power, it shuts off and will not turn on. I've checked the main battery is fully charged, and the connectors are in order.

It will power on with AC power (though not on the cradle), and hard reset itself every time. Also the power/charge indicator light flashes alternating green and amber.

So it seems like I have bigger problems than just the backup battery. I blame Dell. Twice they had to replace the unit while under warranty, and send me a refurbished model, to which I protested (to no avail). So now that I am just out of warranty, the unit fails? Do they plan it that way?

Can anyone suggest the next move to fix this?

Otherwise, any suggestions for a replacement PDA that is not a Dell??

That certainly indicates a hardware problem. Have you tried taking it back apart to make sure you reconnected all ribbons/connectors securely? Ribbon connections have to be fully inserted to contact, they can appear connected but be at an angle or not fully inserted. It's a shot in the dark but worth the check if it's out of warranty and you want to save your PDA...

Yes, I rechecked the connections. The only thing I couldn't figure out is where the little microphone goes when you close the case, as it is loose on it's wire and does not seem to fit anywhere!

I guess I am going to have to send it to someone to repair as soon as I return to the US. Do you also recommend PocketPCtechs.com, or anyone else?

Otherwise I am going to have to purchase a new PDA...

X51V Backup battery does not match

I need to change my backup battery in my X51V, so I ordered one, ordered the extra small torx #5, and proceeded to open the case. Much to my surprise, the backup battery inside was a soldered in job that looks like a small watch battery. So I asked the company that sold me the backup battery (a little green thing with small leads and a nano plug) if the new battery could be adapted somehow. They said that the X51V had both kinds of backup batteries and that I could adapt it in place of the soldered in one, but did not give any further information.

Has anyone run into this? I am thinking that I should cut off the connector and solder the leads in place of the current battery. I don't know what the proper polarity should be. Perhaps if I connect the charger cable with the case open, I can pick up a voltage off of the leads, and then assume that the red one on the replacement is the positive.

Suggestions?

Yoshi

You can use your old battery conector to adapt it to the new one by taking it apart of the batt (never use a soldering gun on li ion batteries or the heat may cause them to explode ) so the only way to use the old connector is using super glue or somethong similar, be sure to first put the two surfaces (batt/metal piece of connector) in contact and then apply the glue OVER them NEVER between them or they could get isolated an no connection will be possible. REMEMBER the bottom part of the batt (no black ring) is positive and goes with the red cable and the ring one is negative gray cable. Last is to isolate the battery itself with isolation tape.
Hope this will work for you.

Just be sure to use a VARTA V20HR or similar please
