Things really need to be formatted for the Axim or the mobile operating system for them to work. As for jpegs, yes. But most programs no. But there are many thousands of programs for the mobile os. Best thing to do is google a pocket pc software site and explore what you can download. Just about anything you will want is in mobile format.

Welcome to the site Matt, simple answer, you can download any thing you like as long as you have the space for it. You just need to specify where large files are stored, to one of your memory cards. there are only certain compatible files [as mentioned] that are usable with the device though. Most standard images and documents are supported, although some may require additional software.
