X50v questions
Just picked up an x50v for my first pocket PC. I need a scheduler, planner and note machine. I've never used a PDA before and have a few questions.
What is the standard software bundle, and how can I find this software?
What battery is the best to use? Can I get one of those extended batteries off of ebay? Will it fit in where the normal battery is ?
WHat is the best application to use WiFI?
Since I'm just getting started, I'm sure I'll have a bunch more questions.
THanks for any help.

Welcome to the site
Pocket informant from webis, is an all in one calendar solution. But I now prefer Calendar Touch from SBSH software. For notes I use Evernote, it's an online service, give you a PC client and WinMo client that link together, free or premium, start of with the free and see what you think.
You can get all varieties of extended batteries, but when looking for one on ebay, try to get one from a reputable dealer. Do your research on this one. I've always preferred to carry a couple of spare standard batteries and change them as needed, thus maintaining the slim form factor of the Ax.
The built in wifi utility should be fine in most cases, depending on what sort of encryption the networks you plan on using. the x50v only uses 802.11b wireless.
In general there are lot's of paid and FREE applications that you can pick up, and trial and error is the key, dive in and see what you find, remember google is your friend

I agree with Pedah, that the built in utility for wifi is good. As for batteries, you really need to be careful as some people are selling used (as in life of battery) on ebay. Also an extended battery will fit, but remember it is fatter and will not fit the stock case for the Ax. Take Pedah's advice on the other things, as for me I just use the outlook calender.

Thnaks for the input. Not sure how to set the device up for WiFi use, I'm going through the owner's manual, but seem fairly cryptic at this point. Is this easier than it looks? I hope so. Thanks for the help.

I need some more help.
OK,
I just tried to "sync" for the first time. I'm connected to my PC with a cable (USB), I use this setup all the time. The computer recognizes the PDA, however, the PDA and the Sync program don't/won't "connect". I'm not sure what to do next. Any ideas?

What version of activesync are you using, the latest is 4.5, you can download here, same link will take you to download link for what you need for Vista and Windows 7. You also need Outlook installed on the PC.
One question, when you say doesn't connect, do you get any sort of trouble shooter pop up?

Still with the sync problems
OK,
I downloaded v4.5, thanks a bunch for the link. However, I still cannot "sync". When I first connect to my PC, it tries to over and over again...but I still get the Not connected display note on the Axim. On the connection settings window, all the boxes are checked, including the "allow USB connection" block. On the PC, when I ask it to connect, it goes through and looks at all the COM ports, then eventually says that the USB is available (i'm already connected to it). The MIRCOSOFT connection window also says "no partnerships". Any ideas?

The fact that there is no partnership showing, shows that it is not set up to sync yet. Make sure the ax is connected directly to the computer, do not I'm assuming you have xp on your pc. Is it up to date? Do you have Outlook installed? Preferably the version on your x50v installation CD. Not Outlook Express.
When you connect initially, activesync should open a connection setup window, that lets you setup the partnership, if this isn't happening, there's a problem, as to all intents and purposes you are still on your initial sync. At this point I would have to suggest a hard reset, and try again, with a fresh ax. If you decide to go down that road, use a backup program like Spb Backup or sprite Backup to restore your ax after you setup sync and see if the problem returns. Then at least you will know that there is something in your settings or installed programs that is causing the problem.

How to find and install a new OS?
Pedah,
I just finished the Sync process .....thanks. Now I'm trying to get the OS upgraded to 5.0 or higher (I currently have 4.21 on the x50v); any suggestions as to where I can get it? Also, can I install this newer OS without dorking up my current setup? Thanks for all the help.

Okie Dokey If you mean the Dell version of the rom, A05 from Dell, it's here. The backup programs I mentioned earlier, especially Spb Backup will allow you to restore your device to it's pre update settings, programs and everything.
If you mean updating to windows mobile 5, there was a dell update for that but they pulled it, and issued a rollback. There is a version of wm 6.1 available for the x50v, at HTC geeks I think, but flashing roms as opposed to installing from the PC is dodgy, and could result in a bricked device.
